High heart rates

Does anyone else have insane heart rates when their sick. I'm talking 300+ when walking but normal when sitting. I've had EKG's and my heart is fine. What's the mechanisms behind this type of thing, or is my heart just trying to tell me to sit down for a while

I have NEVER had a heart rate in the 300s I can't even imagine how you could have that.

Sometimes my heart rate is elevated when I am sick - with just the slightest of activities - but usually elevated for me is about 135ish. My normal heart rate is about 100-115 with activity or shortly after activity and about 90-100 at rest.

I honestly have no advice to offer, but man oh man does 300 seem high. How are your sats when your heart rate is so elevated? Maybe when you are that sick you need O2 or something.

What about vitamin mineral levels? Do you increase albuterol treatments and other treatments? Do they ever check your vitamin and mineral levels when you are sick - maybe you need to take a supplement for something if you are deficient.

Just a thought - I know when I have had elevated heart rate in the past - above 140 I have had a mineral deficiency - since I found that out and started taking a supplement I have found I have much fewer occurances of the increased heart rate after treatments and things.

Hope you get things sorted out and are able to figure out why your heart rate is so high when you are ill. Is there a nurse checking your pulse when it is that high or are you checking it? If you are checking it? What do they say about your heart rate being so elevated?

I ask that just out of curiousity cause I have never heard of that and would be interested in what they think or what they would do.

Lindsey

LOL I accidently hit 3 instead of 2 sorry everyone. I meant to say 200. Gotta start proof reading what I type from now on. Still though, 200 is really high as well but it last about a minute or less and then drops back.

I could not imagine having a heart rate that high!! wow! Mine is normally around 70 - 80 at rest and probably about 110 while active at it's highest although i do have the odd palpitation and very occasionally i'll have an 'episode' where for no reason my heart suddenly starts beating real fast for about 5 mins usually, then eventually calms down.....i have no idea what causes it, but it is scary when it happens. I have no idea what causes this and it has only been happening over the last two years as my health has been a little worse than any other time in my life.
I read somewhere the other day that when the body is fighting infection and has a fever, the heartrate will be increased. Having just had pneomonia with a slight fever (37.3 at the highest point), I checked my pulse and sure enough, my resting rate was about 85-90 beats per minute and now that i'm better again it's back down to about 70-75, so this could have something to do with your heart rate.
The other possibilities are a magnesium or potassium deficiency or depending on how bad your CF is, your heart could be showing early signs of heart failure, but that is the least likely option unless you have been very unwell for a significant length of time.
If it's bothering you, get it checked out more thoroughly, anxiety will only add to the problem.

Well, I know I don't have any type of heart failure problems because this only happens when I get sick. I guess It's just the stress of an infection and walking that are just pushing it over the normal range. Glad you mentioned potassium though, I'm always deficient in potassium. My nurse called today and it seems my vitamin levels are not very good either so I need to solve that and maybe I'll get to feeling better sooner. Also they think I might have cfrd so we will see how that turns out later.

I was going to say holy crap batman when I saw that 300! Usually people aren't conscious at 300, I think I actually have pulled out paddles when I have seen numbers like that (depends on the rhythm)- old ICU nurse in me. Even 200 is pretty high...has the doctor considered putting what is called a Holter monitor on you (or an event monitor for that matter?) The Holter measures the heart activity for a 24 hour period, you get a diary and write down what you are doing at the time of any symptoms (ie dizzy, faint, palpitations etc...). Afterwards, you give the device to your doc and it is then read by a cardiologist. If you have arrythmias, they will show up. I have SVT, supra ventricular tachycardia, caught by an event monitor. My heart rates would go to 200 and I would feel like crap, like fainting. My blood pressure would fall dangerously low, 70's systolically. I have even had IV cardiac drugs to slow the damned thing down. I am now on meds to supress those rhythms. The point is, if it weren't for that monitor, I may never have had an accurate diagnosis. An EKG when you are resting usually won't show much. That's why the Holter because it is a continous EKG for 24 hours, shows all of the changes when you exert yourself, sleep, eat etc..you get my point.
As alot of folks have said here, perhaps looking into mineral deficiencies would be a good idea (potassium, mag, calcium are the big cardiac ones)
I wish you luck and please take care of yourself!
Hugs and best wishes, Jenn

I would think that a heart rate in the 200s would be bad. There might be an underlying problem and an EKG just isnt picking it up. Maybe a 24 hour heart monitor (as Jenn said above) or heart cath might show more. I would go with the monitor first. What are ur PFTs and O2 Sats like? When you are sick and your oxygen starts to drop, you heart rate will increase to compensate for the loss, therefore speeding up to get oxygen to your body faster...trying to bring the levels back up. Stress of being sick can cause it to increase too, but I'm not sure about going that high. My heart has been as high as 125-136 before, but never in the 200s. When your heart starts to climb like that, you might want to sit down, take it easy and rest. Keep us updated on what you find out. Hope you get feeling better.
