Hi Debbie,

Our first experience with iv meds was this past fall. Andrew's fev1 went up within just a few days of the meds. His mucus did not get back to "normal", however, until the picc line was out. So, like Lauren mentioned, it can take awhile for the antibiotic to really do its job.

My question, though, is if she seems to be getting worse, or just staying the same. Are the doctors sure they are treating the right bug with the right med? Did they put her on a medication that required levels to be drawn? It would be interesting to know if there was any room for a more agressive dose of the antibiotic.

Please keep us posted on how Cheyenne is progressing, and take care of yourself, too. PICCs are exhausting for moms.

My 4 year old's last round of home IVs in November lasted about 3 weeks for the tobra and 4 weeks for ceftaz. The Dr. kept the ceftaz longer because despite clear cultures from a bronch, she was still hearing some junky activity at 3 weeks. We asked the same questions and the answer and the answer was that the duration of tobra is more of a concern than the duration of ceftaz so she did not want to over-do it on tobra. The Dr. also said, however, that she's had pediatric patients stay on IVs for 5 months if things are not getting better - but the drug combinations get changed at some point.

If you're getting antsy, be sure you demand a clear answer from the Dr. about what it is s/he is looking for as a sign that the IVs can be ended. For my son's dr. the culture was only part of the criteria.

Thank you for all of your responses. Chey has been on iv's for one month (today). She started out on Cefitaxime and Meropenom. Last week she was taken off of the Meropenom because of a very severe reaction to it. I dont know if levels are to be drawn with these/this medicine or not, but he hasnt done it.

He hasnt done pft's since in the hospital, so I am not sure what they are now, but while incarcerated they had gone down 3% more. Still not too bad at 80% but since she went from 109% in August to 80% now, I am not too comfortable yet with all of this...if we ever get "comfortable" with cf.

Thanks again,
