For those ofyou that use oxygen at home or have it available for home use, how did you know that it was needed?

Hi there,

For me I think my body was telling me I needed O2 long before I actually got with the program and before my docs realized there was an issue. My sats had been sitting at about 94 when healthy and 92 when ill. Then I started getting really short of breath at night when I would lay down to sleep or I would wake up in the middle of the night afraid that I was going to suffocate and thus I would force myself to stay awake - all anxiety related problems thinking I was going to die or would NOT get enough eair if I went to sleep. I just wrote it off to general anxiety and didn't think there was a "real" problem at first. I started taking Ambien and that helped me sleep.

THEN I started waking up with these ferrocious headaches - they could not only take down an elephant but a whole herd of elephants. They would last for a few hours once I got out of bed - on occasion they lasted all day.

Shortly after that I started to think about the O2 being an issue at night - after I talked to a few people. I also at this time had been experiencing extreme fatigue with basic activities - like walking - I just felt like my legs were going to fall off.

I asked my doc about it and did an overnight oximetry study and I DID need O2 at night at least. I desatted pretty severely at night according to the study. Then I tried using the O2 when I walked on the treadmill just to see if I felt any different and I noticed I did NOT get the fatigued feeling. I started using it when I exercised and slept at that point. When I hurt my back at the end of Dec beg of Jan I started using the O2 more often because I was short of breath more and more fatigued due to pain. My sats were at 89 when I was admitted for IVs at the end of Jan so I started using the O2 full time then.

You will probably feel more fatigued if you need - it will be really noticeable and extremely difficult to work through. headaches at times, dizziness, lack of appetite was a big one for me that I didn't notice until I started using the O2 full time I started eating so much more.

I hope that info helped.
Take Care,
Lindsey

I started it at home after a hospital visit, my O2's weren't up enough when I left, but I was eventually able to be off during the day, then another hospital visit, then finally my lobectomy 3 weeks ago, I didn't need it like Lindsey, but I can tell now when I need it. I did an overnight test about a year ago and didn't need it at night so it wasn't until the hospital visit in Aug. that it changed.

You can always ask for the test overnight, best thing to do is get your own oximeter, which sadly insurance won't pay for or if they do they pay for half which home health companies jack up the price to double anyways that it's better to just buy online. A good brand is Nonin we just bought off their website I think.

i really find my oxygen helpful to me when i have had a hard day. its great to lie down on my bed with my oxygen mask on, relaxing. because i get alot of aches and pains all over my body, the oxygen really helps to give my body a rest from working so hard. i also find the oxygen helpful when im exercising indoors or if i no im going to be doing alot of house work.

my son was on home o2 for 4 months after a complete lung collapse. We were on it for 24 /7 for 2 months and then at night for 2 months. I was told if you cant maintain a 92 you needed o2. I got a pulsox it is made by onyx you slip your finger in and you get saturation and heart rate. He does not need to use o2 anymore. <img src="i/expressions/present.gif" border="0"> as posted by others I noticed the better his saturation got so did his weight gain. And all around steady improvment. See about a little pulsox. Doesnt your clinic take your saturation every visit?

I never even thought about o2 until I became sick with pneumonia and my O2 Sats would not stay above I think a 92-93 at rest. They did a sleep study and all that great stuff and then I went on O2 at night and gradually needed to use it more and more. It made a difference though and I did feel a lot better when I was using it!
