Hospital birth questions

I delivered at the "women's hospital" (UPMC Magee)
most CF admissions for adults are at a different hospital a few min away. I took all my own meds with me, and I think the floor nurses were happy that I did. I wasn't allowed to eat or drink during labor, so I didn't need much then. I did do a xopenex treatment at one point ( I brought my own neb set up so I could have it when I wanted it). My Ob team was great about letting me tell them what I needed on the CF side of things, I did page my CF doc to let him know I was there just in case I or my doctors needed him.
The next day when I could eat I was glad to have my meds with me, I think it would have taken the pharmacy there a long time to get my enzymes and things since they are not standard there. They did order respritory therapy to come, I usually sent them away and convinced them sleep was more important than watching me blow into a accapella with no result. I would ask the doctors what the hospital policy is ahead of time.

Both times I brought my own enzymes. I never leave home without them anyway. It sure was a good thing I brought them because the hospital pharmacy did not have Ultrase MT 18 in stock. All other varieties just not the 18's! I think not having my enzymes right with me would have been a huge hassle. With a new baby you never know when you will eat - there are delays w/ hospital food or people bring you yummy food from the outisde and you want to eat it ASAP not when your nurse gets around to bringing you your enzymes. Also, the nurses did not seem to grasp that I took enzymes as needed. They were always asking me if I took my X time of day dose of Ultrase. I just told them yes to get them to leave me alone.

When I had Alexa I was also taking Pulomozyme and Tobi. The hospital provided both. Nurses brought those meds to me and I took them as soon as I could.

When I had Hannah I was only taking 1 Pulmozyme neb a day and the hospital provided that. Again, nurse brought it to me and I took it as soon as I could.

I delivered at the same hospital CF'ers do in patinet. The maternity nurses pretty much had no clue about CF or at least adults with CF. They are too seperate worlds in the hospital.

I brought my own cf meds and gear as planned with my CF team and as told to my OB. In other words I didn't ask them, I told them my cf doc thought it would be best if I brought my own cf needs. They agreed since they are not really equipped to care for a cfer nor do they know the drill.

It turned out to be awesome to have my cf stuff because whenever I wanted to "buy time" in decision making or stall the inevitable "next step." I could strap on my vest or do a neb and they left me alone. You see for me I was always on their clock since my water ruptured prematurely so they were in a hurry to get that baby out. They waited 36 hours though partially due to my cf stalling techniques as well as their fear (that I instilled in them) of going c-section.

Search birth plan on here if you want to see a few of our birth plans. I made reference to the cf stuff in there and they appreciated my planning for sure.

I had no problems because I delivered at the same hospital (different floor) as my CF admissions are.

The only thing that was different & a pain was that my iv was gravity fed instead of the IV pump.

Meds were no problem. In stock etc & I was in for a tune up before delivery so orders were in place.

Nebs were brought by my therapists who are part of the CF team so no worries there either.

Now that I look back that would be a lot different if I delivered at my local hospital as I originally wanted...>>DUH!
