Hospital Indemnity Policy for CFers

Just though I'd pass this info along. Aflac no longer offers hospital indemnity policies to CFers (as some of you might know), BUT a company called Combined Insurance does currently offer it. I'd recommend you all check it out before they hop on the "no CFers" bandwagon too. They do exclude diabetics though.

For those who aren't familiar with what hospital indemnity is, it pays you for hospitalizations. So this is how my policy breaks down, I've got myself and the 3 kids covered for $169 a month, and the kids benefits are paid at 50% (I could get them their own policies for slightly more, but this policy was for Mark more than anyone). For that, after waiting the 12 month pre-existing condition waiting period, we get the following benefits.

----$600 for each Initial hospital admission (paid only once per every 30 days)
----$300 for EACH DAY in the hospital
----$300 ADDITIONAL for EACH DAY in the ICU
----$100 for ER visit (4 per person per calendar year)

and then there are some surgery benefits too but depends on type of surgery. Ryland had tubes placed and his tonsils removed and they paid me $1000.

This money is paid directly to the policyholder, and is NOT reportable or taxable.

Hope this helps some of you guys with CFers in and out of the hospital and such!

Hell, I would have broken their banks if I had that policy the last time I was in! I was hospitalized for 5 weeks in the ICU back in Nov....That would have been have been some serious change. I am definitely looking into these policies.
Thanks for the heads up,

Julie,
Hi! Hope you and the family are well!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
I just thought I'd reply because Zoe has a policy with Combined, we got her policy in 2008. It is a sickness/hospital plan only, that they no longer write.
So, I called our agent yesterday to find out about any other policies they are now writing for a friend of mine.
He told me about the policy you have. It is actually a accident/sickness policy in one. They will not write it to just children. There has to be at least one adult on the policy, then all children 17 and under are covered. They are on the policy until the age of 25, then they can switch to their own policy. Anyone ever being treated for the following can not be covered: Cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart attack or a heart condition. Also, if you or the child has Medicaid, they cannot get the policy.
I was told that these are the benefits now:
Hosptial=$800.00 per admission
In Hospital pay=$200.00 per day
After Hospital Recovery Pay=$100.00 per day up to the amount of days in hospital
Outpatient surgery=adult/$1000.00 child/$500.00
ER visits=adult/$100.00 child/$50.00
Also pays for 2 follow-up visits with a Dr. after the ER visit for adults, 4 visits for child. I think it was $50.00
Fractures=adult/$1000.00 child/$500.00
There was also a payment for DM equipment related to an accident.

I was quoted these prices:
1 parent with children=$107.25 a month
2 parents with children=$160.33 a month

For the CF, there is a year pre-existing clause. It won't cover anything related to CF for the first year. But everything else starts as soon as the policy is written.
They no longer sell policies over the phone like they did when I got Zoe's, so you can either call the 800 number on the web site to request a local agent call you, or fill out the request on line.

I will tell everyone.... I KNOW this company pays. Mel had the same policy Zoe has, that is how I found out about it, she got us in right before they quit writing the one we have. They paid for many vacations for Mel and her family. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Marci, that's the website, here's a more specific link: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.combinedinsurance.com/insurance-types/accident-insurance.html
">http://www.combinedinsurance.c...cident-insurance.html
</a>
Their accident/sickness is combined into one policy, so whether it's for an injury or illness, it's all covered the same.

Jada, my policy was issued February of 2010, so it's a little over a year old. I also think the payment amounts and restrictions might vary depending on the State you live in. The kids and I were BOTH on medicaid when we applied, and the kids still are. But we were on it for low income, and not for disabilities so that might have made a difference.

The payment for hospital admission is lower on mine at $600, but the daily rate is $300. I also got the ICU rider, which is like an additional $26 per year.

I agree, this company DOES pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alisha, check out the link above. It's an accident and sickness policy. Some states sell them as a joint policy, and some as a separate.

Just my personal opinion... I don't see why someone wouldn't cover their spouse and kids. I mean, I've had a few ER visits for myself, and some for the kids. And as they get older and into sports, broken bones, stitches, broken teeth... Covering my kids was only $13 more per month for me. And getting the policy on just myself was $98. So I choose the family policy and could add Mark (my ex husband) and all 3 of my kids for like $70 more. Just a though
