hospital vs. home iv's

Hi everyone, as most of you know I'm still not feeling well. My cough is gross, my sinuses are killing me, etc. etc. I've been on home IVs since September and nothing seems to be working. My dad keeps pushing going into the hospital but I'm scared b/c I'd have to take time from work and school (I'm supposed to graduate college May 19th).

Can anyone shed some light on whether a hospital stay is more potent and/or could wipe out whatever is in me!?!

Its a tough question... I think it depends a lot on each individual, and each of our home environments.

Are you pushing yourself to do a ton of stuff while at home on IVs? If so, you may not be getting enough rest, etc, and may benefit from the forced rest of the hospital enviroment.

Do you have trouble with complying with your pt or nebs or IV routine? Do you need more help at home with your routine than you are getting? Having the hospital staff show up at appropriate times to keep you on track with your routine might be beneficial (assuming they show up when they are supposed too...)

Is there something detrimental at home that is keeping you from improving? (for example, second hand smoke), then the hospital might be better.

Would your doc try a different combination of drugs if you were in the hospital?? It sounds like the ones you have tried so far aren't doing the trick.

For me, I like to do home cleanouts whenever possible. I like my own germs, and don't want anyone elses. I like my own bed, own food, and am pretty good (not perfect) at toning down my daily activities when on ivs. However, my last few cleanouts have been more of the "maintenance" variety, and not because I was really, really sick. If I had been on home ivs for as long as you have been, and not improving, I think I would seriously consider the hospital route.

I'm sorry you're not feeling better, and hope it turns around soon.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for such a speedy response. Yea, the one thing that I do admit is that I am constantly in motion. Even while on IV's I'm either at work, in class, doing schoolwork. I'm a bit of a workaholic lol I suppose that it's the least harmful of -isms to be, and beneficial at times, but when it comes to these matters it kinda stinks. My doctor is not good at keeping me maintained, he's always asking me what I want to do w/ things, and which IVs I feel like going on, etc. I suppose maybe I should enroll in medical school before its too late! lol

We are getting a second opinion from a hospital in Manhattan and I'm stepping up on chest pt. I'll have to add someone beating on me with the acapella. I was very curious as to anyone else's take on whether being hospitalized over home IVs. Besides when I was a senior in high school, this is my only bout with IVs for pulmonary maintenance, usually oral was my route of administration.

Thank you again for your help! Btw, The Band rocks, nice choice <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> you're a classic rock lover as well?

FOR ME hospital is the best. It is difficult emotionally, but I know me & even with the best help at home I would overdo at home. I also get the manual CPT in the hospital which I feel is better while I am sick versus the vest.

Many people worry about the bugs in the hospital. I worry about not bouncing back if I DONT go into the hospital.

It sounds like your schedule & self disciplin doesnt really allow for you to recover as you should. The meds only do so much.

I understand the timing probably sucks, but I really think you should go in soon. The longer you hold off & dont bounce back the more damage will be done.
