hospital vs. home iv's

Well you certainly sound amazing to me. Holding down a job and going to school! How wonderful! In response to your question though.

We have always started out in the hospital before going to home IV. For Anna anyways. Rachel has never done home IV and has only been hospitalized for IV antibiotics three times. Once, just cause she was there for something else.

My Anna is very germ concious. She doesn't leave her hospital room when she is in hospital except on the rare occasion she heads down to visit the child life specialist (even at 21 she still drops in for a quick visit) or to go for a "walk" (to get her fav. food two blocks over).

Somtimes you just need to get that extra PT & treatments by a resp. therapist. Nebs and percussion 4 times a day. Neither of my girls use a vest. I am surprised that your doc. did not suggest admitting you during Christmas break or even spring break when things didn't improve. Even a week in hospital finishing up with home IV might have helped.

I think you should seriously consider being admitted right after graduation if you think you can make it til then. I know graduation is very important that's why I suggested, if you can make it another month, then going in. I like that your doc. wants your input on what you think would work but sounds to me like he's making his decisions based solely on what you think will work. UMMMM. that's not right, unless he is in complete agreement. What have your pft's been like since Sept.? Any improvements at all or are they going up then down fairly quickly after finishing up your course?

I hope you feel better soon.

I am sorry to hear you are going thru all this. I myself like to do all my iv's at home. The only time i go in the hospital is if it's something serious. With that being said, it might be a good idea for you to go in the hospital. They can do all the tests necessary to find out what is going on and causing all the trouble you are having. The Dr. can more closely monitor you and your progress and whether you are getting the most you can from the regimen you are on, and if not can change things up. I hope you get to feeling better soon.<img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0"> Please update us .....

I prefer to do home iv's too i hate being away from home (and my dog)
I used to work whilst on them but was told they didn't work as well so now i stay home and rest and my results are much better.
I think the only danger is that if you feel ok you can do too much at home.

Hope you feel better soon x

Thank you all so much for all your responses!

I went to the doctor today (my actual CF doc wasn't in so I was seen by the overseeing doc). They don't quite understand what's going on b/c my PFTs are very high 97% but I feel so awful. They have once again written me off to "bad luck" and "when it rains it pours". It's really discouraging. They're taking me off IVs but leaving the line in until Friday to see what happens. I was off IV for 2 days last week and got put back on because I was feeling awful, and now that awful feeling still hasn't passed. I left the office crying, they must think I'm nuts.

The upside is that I have an appointment for the CF clinic at St. Vincent's in Manhattan on May 9th. It's 3 days after my sinus surgery but I'll drag myself in to get seen by someone other than my own doctor! lol

Oh jeez, where would I be if I couldn't make light of such situations? Do you think there's a study on whether CF patients are more humorous than most other people b/c of the cards we've been dealt? lol

I'll keep you all updated on how things progress

Thank you all again!!
