Hospitalizations

The first time I ever went into the hospital I was 25. I was in for a day for them to start a pic and then I did 2 weeks of IV treatments at home. In the past 3 years I have been in twice. Both times for a week and then I did a week of IVs at home. My FEV1 are normally between 50% and 65%. When I went in last June, they had dropped to 38% but when I went back for my check up 2 weeks later they were at 63%. I prefer to do the home IV route but I know I get more PT in the hospital. Every time I go in the hospital, my friends and family think on on the verge of death, even though I am just going in for a clean out.

not to change to subject too much.
Before the cepacia scare did anyone do anything fun in the hospital? Such as putting sugar in another CF patients bed? water fights with sryinges? just a note to brighten it up. Go and watch a movie with another Cf patients room? Oder pizza at midnight?

just curious

I used to have a lot of fun with some of the other CF patients. When I was in hospital a few times for pancreatic problems, I would stay up all night haveing fun with the other patients. We did the water fight thing, we'd sometimes roll our beds around, etc. It used to be so fun.

im like you loulou. i only go into hospital if im incapable of doing my own meds, or will be [for example after an operation]. i also do not trust the staff. there have been too many times where they have forgotten my medication, given them to me at the wrong time, given me the wrong ones or given them to me the wrong way. i can remember one nurse tried to to do a fast push dose of pure tobramycin. luckily i was watching her every move and asked "excuse me, but what the hell are you doing?". i also dont like the way that they dont let you dispense the drugs. people experienced with their owns medicines should be given a little lockup box to keep the meds in and give them to themselves.

I'm curious how everyone seems to have so much control over whether they go into the hospital or get to stay at home for home IVs. How do you get to choose, what do you say to your doctors? For me, it's an 8 hour car drive, or a quick flight to my doctors and I absolutely hate being in the hospital for 2 weeks. My mom lives close to where the hospital is so she visits me on her lunch breaks from work, but my husband meanwhile who is the one I really want to see, can't visit me until the weekends. It's such a huge drag and always gets very depressing. Are all of you close to your doctors/hospital in case something were to happen while you were on home IVs?

Kelly, I live 5 hrs. away from my hospital too and it drives me nuts to stay there. I have to take Xanax while I'm there because I get so anxious. I ususally just tell them what I'm willing to do. I'll stay for a few days to get started and then go home. I've never had any problems with home IV"s but I'm sure if an emergency came up I would go to the ER like normal. You can refuse to stay, especailly if it's just a mantainence thing. I usually don't mind staying if I'm sick, but the minute I start feeling better I put in to finish at home.

Whenever my docs bring up IV and hospitals, I TELL them that I will do it at home whether I have to hire a nurse or not. I don't give them the option unless I'm going on something I've never been on. Plus it all depends on how your doc handles things.
