Hospitals banning smoking on premisis

I read last week that hospitals in our capital city are banning smoking from anywhere on hospital grounds, including in your own car! I hope this is a sign of things to come and hope that our hospital will be picking up this policy! There's nothing more annoying than carrying your child with a lung disease into a hospital to help him and walking through a cloud of smoke to get inside. It's really great seeing people in their hospital gowns, with IV's out there puffing. And when it is a pregnant woman...I literally hold my tongue.

Where do you live? I always found it amazing when it came to the "smoking laws." I worked at our local hospital & at that time you couldnt smoke inside the building, but you could still smoke on grounds. I would see my co workers in a cloud of smoke as cancer patients were coming in for their treatments. Unfortunately like many things, its easier to see when you are on the outside looking in. I grew up in a smoking environment (yes, I know your thoughts) & until my recent problems put up with the smokers in my life because I felt I didnt have a choice. Now I realize that I do & if they want to visit with me that they will curb there habit. Please realize that this group includes my own Mother & husband. My husband understands, but believe it or no my own Mother cops an attitude when I get up & walk away as she lites up. Especially since she is a terrible chain smoker. Instead of laying the "guilt" trip, I just lay the "reality" trip which is I am working to damn hard to maintain myself & will allow no one to jeopardize me because of their own disgusting habits.

My husband works at the Univ. of Mich. Hospital and they banned smoking on the grounds (except in one designated area) quite some time ago. Unfortunately, the hospital doesn't really enforce it unless it's with regard to employees. However, my husband has no problem telling anyone that it is a non-smoking facility/grounds. He catches grief from some people which really ticks him off (and me for that matter). It's especially annoying when we're taking our son to clinic and we have to walk him through a "smoke zone" because smokers think they have the right to poison our air.

Melissa, I see people doing that all the time. And every time I see it happen, as I walk by the person smoking, and the sign, I do a little something that always makes me feel better. I read out loud (at a pretty high volume), "NO SMOKING IN THIS AREA" and then shoot the person a nasty look. Then they look pretty pissed, it's rather amusing.

I live in Iowa and they are starting it in Des Moines. I am hoping the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City will follow suit. I don't say anything to the people by the door right now...because I don't want my kids hearing them say they have a right to smoke there right now. But as soon as it passes at our hospital (I have high hopes) I will open my mouth. My kids already make coughing noises when we walk through it and hold their noses. I talk to myself outloud. Bad habit...

It has annoyed me since Emily was little that the "smoking area" is always right outside the door so no matter who you are or why you are there, you have to walk directly through the smoky area to get into the hospital. Who at the hospitals was not thinking the day they decided to make that area the smoking area? DUH!

They have a smoking area at our hospital but it by the supply drop off and I have seen people have security go off on them for smoking anywhere else. I hear parents complaining about it being so far away all the time. But I have also seen people smoking in their cars with kids in there or walking in the garage holding babies and smoking. That just does not make since to me.

I think it could also be funny to point and squint at the sign (as if you cannot quite make out the words), and ask the person (innocently as possible) "excuse me, but could you please tell me what that sign says??"

I have never done this (in fact I just thought of it right now as I read emily's post)

I really like the idea of smoking bans on all hospital property. It is only common sense. The sick ppl come here to get well ....so no smoking is allowed.........Can't wait till more hospitals are like that.

they need to because i cant stand having to walk through smoke to get in hospital....usually i just stop breathing for a brief moment. i wear oxygen and it really irritates me when smokers are standing by an entrance, to lets say the grocery store, and they see you are lugging an oxygen tank and they just stand there puffing away on cancer sticks. they could atleast have enough respect to move out the way!

Shelley,

Whereabouts in Iowa are you? We used to live in Iowa City and I thought smoking on U of I grounds was prohibited except for a designated area. I hear they have a wonderful CF clinic there. We moved before my son was ever diagnosed. We really miss it there sometimes - such a good place to live.

Carey,

How long have you been gone? I grew up in West Branch by Iowa City. I now live in Bettendorf, (Quad Cities) but we still go to the University and probably always will. We've also lived in Sioux City, Osceola and Manchester. All job transfers for my husband. I love Iowa City and Bettendorf has been a very nice place for us too. The CF clinic has a wonderful staff at the University. I would drive 3 hours if I had to.

At the U, they smoke right in front of the doors in the ramp to the skywalk, every level and every door. Grrr! There's really nowhere else close to park without carrying Cale across lanes of traffic and diesel campus buses. Hopefully they pick up this ban too and soon!

Shelley,

We've been gone 5 years. We lived in Coralville, near the new mall (well, it was new back then!). I actually really miss being there sometimes. I moved there with a grudge and assumed I probably would hate it, but I fell in love with the place. If family weren't so far away (ok, and the freezing rain and tornado factor weren't there), we'd still be living there. My husband attended graduate school at U of I. And, come to think of it, when I was pregnant with my boys there, I do remember people smoking on the ramps as I entered the clinic (staff members mostly). How aggravating!!! Anyway, we do plan on visiting in the next few years - - I hope you enjoy living there as much as I did.

Carey
