I am not sure what FEV1's are, but I have visited my CF doctor 1nce a year for the past 10 years or so, and have gotten my yearly blood tests and done a breathing test where i have to blow out really hard for a long time and hold it, and I have ranked better then a normal person without CF. My CF dr has been more concerened with me gaining wieght then anything else. I stay active and play sports and ice hockey which my doctor said is good because if I can handle exercising in the cold air my lungs are in good shape. I also rarley get sick. I think I just have a more mild case of CF.

Typically, I have been hospitalized once a year since I was 10. There was an occasional year where I would have to be hospitalized more, and like some other people have said, it has increased in frequency as I have gotten older. I consider myself to be relatively healthy. My PFT's are steady at 75-80, but have been dropping in the past few months to below 70. I have pseudomonas and MRSA, but have only had the MRSA since 2004. That was the closest that I had been in the hospital. I went in for a regular cleanout in April b/c I had been catching everything under the sun and was on new oral meds like every two weeks, but they didnt realize how bad the MRSA had been. I ended up back in the hosp. in July of that same year, but this time we were able to find and treat the MRSA.

Since then I have been doing well, because we know what to treat (and I finally learned how to cough up samples). I was a very stubborn individual (and prob still am) and would NEVER cough anything up, for some reason i would rather have my throat swabbed (which is not as good a sample as coughing something up). So moral of the story, I am now able to produce a better sample, and with that we can treat what needs to be treated. I dont get put in the hosp unless I am sick. I like to maintain my health, so in some instances I agree with this theory and sometimes I dont. With my previous doctor (who retired) I would go in for maintenance (if I wasnt sick), but my new dr (who is just awesome), I dont go in unless I am sick. I dont know, I guess we will see this week, I went for my appt last week and altho I was complaining of a cough and exhaustion and lower PFT's I will have to see what happens, i guess. They put me on bactrim to see if that helps at all, and if it doesnt then we will see. Its wierd, cuz I dont feel that sick, I feel like I am tired from being busy, and I feel that my cough is baseline, so I dont know if he will do anything else to treat the MRSA.

When my son was first diagnosed and I was having one of my first discussions with his doctor about CF, he said on average he might be in the hospital for about a week once a year. Sometimes more and sometimes less, but that was an average.

I am 23 w/cf, I've never been hospitalized since I was diagnosed at 6 months. Just recently I had my 1st PICC experience luckily I got to tend to it at home and didn't have to go to the hospital. It was an emotional experience for me in the beginning but the results were well worth it.

I recall 3 hospital stays in my life. Two were for lung problems (pneumonia) and the other stay was for some "stomach bug". I am 35 and I haven't been in the hospital for probably 20 years. My last stay was when I was in high school. There have been a few times when I had an infection/mild pneumonia that I think the doc would have preferred me to go in to the hospital, but I always opt for the oral antibiotics (and knock on wood, so far they have done the job). Like you, I have a phobia with needles so I try to avoid them.
