Do you do anything special to keep your hot tubs 'germ' free. Do you use bromine or chlorine?

How often do you use them. What kind have you got and finally where is the best place to buy one & the cheapest place to buy chemicals once the tub has been purchased.

Thanks

We have a hot tub.. Well my parents do.. I have never been in it because the thought of being in the hot tub with my parents at the same time does not appeal to me... HA...and also I am not a fan of sitting in water that is reused....But my dad is real careful with it.. Just in case I ever decide to go in they use chlorine..and they have a PH tester... that tells them what to add to keep the water at the perfect alkaline base level.

I don't think I will go in a hot tub.. for sure never public.. same with public pools.....but I know they say at home ones are much safer.... Me and germs don't get along that well...

We use chlorine and shock in our hot tub. My daughter (with CF) has been using a hot tub for approximately 3 years to help with her osteoarthritis. We had a booklet from the CF center with the recommended chlorine levels - but, I cannot locate it at this time. Basically we use test strips and keep the chlorine in the high level. My daughter has never cultured Pseudomonas or MRSA as a result of using our hot tub. However, I would not let her use a public hot tub.

I'm one of the rare few that doesn't see the point in avoiding public pools and stuff. I go to water parks, public pools, public hot tubs, etc. We also happen to have a pool and hot tub at home, both of which are kept clean, but I don't know with what, or how much.

My parents use bromine. I've never gone in it though. I think sometime I may chance it when I'm stiff from working out or something.... I just get really nervous since my docs have always told me to avoid them. The stuff you can get from them is not all IN the water. Rather, its what the steam breeds... so, public versus private would make no difference (according to my docs). Although, if the hottub is outside, it is a little bit better and if you KNOW its cleaned often, that also may make it better. That's all according to my docs.

I read an article a while back that most respiratory problems connected to hot tubs are connected to hot tubs in the homes. Many people who were having reactions to chemicals or the mold went into the hot tubs thinking it would help when all it did was make things worse. There is no health regulations governing the home ones & often they are in an enclosed area that is not meant for moisture & breads mold easy then the normal moisture saturated areas. I have always loved hot tubs, but am careful of where I go in them. I smell & look& if it doesnt seem right I avoid it. I would love to have one for the aches & pains, but fear the noted problems associated with home hot tubs.

I agree with Emily - I certainly have never avoided pools -- I took swimming lessons for years, taught swimming lessons, and lifegaurded in both indoor and outdoor pool facilities.

I do somewhat avoid hot tubs in small enclosed rooms - that's where mold potentially could be an issue, but really, germs are everywhere. In my personal cost/benefit analysis, the physical activity benefits from swimming and pools outweigh the risks of infection.

It's a good thing there are no Health Regulations on hot tubs in your own home. I don't think I would appreciate having a governmental inspector coming into my home to inspect my hot tub. You either take care of the thing or you don't - and if you're not willing to take care of it, then don't get one.

I remember there was an old documentary talking about this. They said that hot tubs were basically giant bacteria nurseries, and the worse area for it is right above the surface by like one foot or so (right about where your face/nose/mouth is). They said that you breath in a ton of bacteria that way.

Regardless of chemical protections, I wouldnt have one and I wouldn't purposely use one.
