Hi, ya'll.
Just curious if anyone knows if we CFers MUST avoid PERSONAL OUTDOOR hot tubs??? I am going to visit my parents and they have a hot tub that they love to sit in in their backyard. I know public hot tubs are a no-no, but I didn't know if it is different when the only people using it are family, it is outside, and it is cleaned regularily? Thanks for any info.

Hi Sonia,
I never heard anything about not going into hottubs until recently and i dont know the exact reason why, but i do know that years ago ( maybe around 1992) when i had very minimal lung problems i went in my brother in laws hot tub a few times and maybe the third time i started putting together that each time i got in that thing ,i got very tight in the chest. I guess it makes sense that we inhale all the particles( of the chemicals used in the hottub to keep it clean) , in the mist that the hottub makes. From then on , hottubs were out for me. I hope you find out your answer

It has to do with the bacteria that live in hot tubs. If not properly cleaned....bacteria thrive in hot and moist areas..therefore..they thrive in hot tubs. I believe...only my opinion...that if it is a personal hot tub...it is ok. I also LOVE hot tubs...I have CF related arthritis...so they do wonders on the joints.

Has anyone heard of pseudomonas growing in them? Would pseudomonas grow in both private and public hot tubs even if cleaned properly?

Pseudmonas grows anywhere warm, especially anywhere warm and wet. It's impossible to keep it entirely away. Cleaning may help, but it's likely not to get rid of the problem.

I'm pretty sure it's a brewing ground for cepacia. I read that on the web somewhere, so I don't know how true it is. I also love hot tubs. The one I'm usually in is not the cleanest, but I shock it a couple days before I go in it. Don't know if that helps, but it gives me a little piece of mind.

I'd never heard that it was a breeding ground for cepecia, I would like to see that article. I had heard that about the pseudomonas. I try to avoid them, especially indoors. At least if you're outdoors, there is the fresh air component to help.

We have a hot tub at home and when I asked the CF doc about my daughter (3) sitting in it, he recommended that she does not because pseudomonas does grow in hot tubs. He was afraid she would swallow the water and if it got into her lungs could cause problems.

agreed emily. i got psuedomoas ages ago and it had nothing to do with a hot tub. we all end up getting pseudomonas one way or another. dont go overboard folks, theres just no point.

I know you can't live in a bubble, but it doesn't hurt to just be cautious. I, too have had pseudomonas for years, but have recently picked up a second strain. So now I'm wondering just how many strains there are out there? I will stay out of hot tubs/indoor pools just because I don't want 5 different strains of pseudomonas!

I have a hot tub on my back deck and my husband and I use it several times a month. I already have pseud. HOWEVER my niece who also has CF (she's 5) gets in there too (she does not have pseud.) I wonder if we should not be doing this. I will have to check it out with my dr. Thanks for raising my awareness.

Hi, I have psuedomonas I have had it for awhile and not only does it grow in hot tubs but my doc or respitory therapist one of them said it is also on water fountains, faucets anywhere there is water. so what I do is when I turn the water on I let it run a little bit before using it or drinking it. I also read on the internet that it is in dirt too! but then again there is so much bacteria everywhere it is hard to avoid. Knowing that psued is in hot tubs doesnt stop me from going in them. Just once and a great while when Im on vacation or something is when I get in one. The steam I think helps me, because it feels like it is opening my air ways more. I especially love hot steamy showers they help too!
