Housing Suggestions

Dear All:

Dave and I have decided to get us closer to Atlanta for possible clinic visits and to get us closer to his job since I have decided to stay home next year (we're already thinking of ways to save money!). I am going to look in the middle Georgia area for rental housing/apartments for us to live on Thursday and Friday.

I need some suggestions as to what environment might be the best...

I'm thinking OBVIOUSLY smoke-free, pet-free, and limited amount of carpeting. Any additional suggestions since we are looking to rent and not purchase right away (it is on the horizon, just not quite there yet)?

Thanks in advance for everything!!

Emily

I would go for hard-wood floors and central air where you can install a HEPA filter.

For me, once I got my allergies under control, my CF improved a great deal.

Carpets trap dust mites and HEPA central air units can reduce allergens in the air in the house.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

These might be minor things, but there is an allergen febreeze furniture spray you can buy to get rid of 75% of airborn allergens like dust mites, pet dander, etc. You can also buy a carpet powder that you shake onto your carpet and vacum it up after 30 mins - its also for pet and allergens. I buy them a do notice a big difference in my allergies. And like Amy said, hepa filter air purifiers are great. They've saved my life. I also have a hepa filter vacuum that is awesome too.

Check out moisture problems in the house. Check for mildow or mold buildup on the walls, window sills & bathroom. Look around the outside of the building to see whether its real wet or seems to have good drainage. Good Luck!

You might also want to make sure their are exhaust fans in the bathrooms. That's where mold and mildew tend to grow the most. Most older homes don't have them. We just moved out of a home built in the 50's and we bought a dehumidifier to put in the bathroom.
I also go to the CF center in Atl. We live in Moultrie right now, but are building a house in the Thomasville area( south GA). Anyways, good luck and I hope you find something suitable soon.

I would look at a newer unit, that has a fan and or window in ALL of the bathrooms. Both is even better. Feel the ceilings and walls in all the bathrooms when you are inspecting it.

Not sure how hot it gets in that area in the summer but I know in EAstern WA and San Diego AC was a godsend for Mark.

I don't really know about the carpet issue. Seems like Amy made a good point, although we've always had carpet and Mark has as he's grown up as well. You might be able to to take it up with the management team to get the carpets professionally cleaned immediately before move in or maybe even replaced. They do have to reasonably accomodate someone with a disability and that might not be too far fetched. Also, if you have to live in a place with carpet, get a vacuum cleaner with a Hepa filter!

That's all I can think of for now. I'll be back with more ideas if I get any
