How can you tell when your child is sick?

Thanks everyone for your comments. I, too, notice a huge change in the eyes. My older daughter gets circles and they seem glassier than usual. And the moody, grumpy, impatient Kayla starts to come out. I am glad to see that I am not just imagining that things are signs of an illness brewing!

I usually notice when kayla is getting sick as when she exercises she will cough more frequently and get tired more often. She will start to not want to eat as much and this is really noticable as she usually eats like a horse
getting breathless after exercise (more than usual) is another sign for us.

oh my god. My spelling is so bad not to mention the writing skills. Iam sending my 10 year old to sylvan learning center. I think I need to go with him.

That's a tough one. I think everyone is different but our Dr. has us look out for an increase in cough, increase in sputum coughed up, color of sputum (green is a sign of infection), decrease in appetite, and fatigue. Over the years we've also learned to look for moodiness, dark circles under his eyes, red eye lids, and for some reason Sean is very "fidgety" when he's having a flare up.

No, you can't have an X-ray machine at home or a PF analyzer but you can get yourself a peak flow meter - a hand held gauge that measures L/min. Sean does his before and after each breathing treatment. We plot the results so we can see his norm and any downward trends.

My son is 4 and it is tuff to really see that its a c.f flare up and not just a norm thing but i will swear by this his skin color unpinked and he lost weight where the only signs it was c.f and not the masking issues that played the flare up down this time around but he is doing well now since out of the hospital and his color is back and he has gained 4 pds in there,so i will now know the grey flags for him getting a flare up and it usually happens around tune up time.....So thats another cue i guess as well...

I know for me - one of the first signs I would show and still show of infection is decreased appetite. I have to force myself to eat when I am sick or getting sick. It starts out as me eating less at meals and then it gradually gets worse - to the point where I do not want to eat at all the thought of food will make me sick.

I get increased cough with increased sputum production. The stuff I cough up usually changes in color and thickness as well. Alo I know this is nasty but depending on the bug (Psuedo or Staph/MRSA) that is causing the problem for me the taste will be different.

I also get tired - physically and I look tired as well. Dark circles, the rims of my eye lids are red and my eyes sometimes get blood shot. That usually comes towards the end of my being sick - right before I get treatment for whatever has got me down.

Also to add - several relatives of mine get severely cranky when they are sick - especially the little little ones. Alot of it comes from the sinuses - when they have sinus infections because the pressure causes headaches and the headaches and discomfort make them cranky. Also it comes along with being fatigued and tired all the time from fighting illness.

Hope everything goes well with the appointment and that she is feeling better soon.
