How do allergies affect CF symptoms / severity?

Hello, All,
I know it's maddening, all the things we can worry about. I am worried about Sam having allergies, and how this might affect his CF severity and lung involvement. I suffered terribly from allergies as a child, and still usually get a sinus infection every spring and every fall. My husband has allergies as well, so I know there is a 75% chance Sam will also have allergies. Anyone have children who have allergy problems and if so, how do they fair? Does it greatly impact CF severity? Do you have any advice for helping curb the impact?
Thanks,
rosesixtyfive, mother of Sam (ddf508) 6 months old, and Robin (no CF) 4 years old

Our daughter has allergies. She's had them since she was young (she's 28 years old now).

Most children with CF have allergies and they do complicate things but we found that working with an ENT was extremely helpful.

Amy had all of the regular allergy testing done. She's been taking injections for about 8 years now. They've helped alot.

Her CF doctor didn't think it would be helpful to see an ENT at all but it's helped tremendously.

It seems that the allergies didn't technically cause lung damage. But having to battle the allergy symptoms added to the not-feeling-well days - and not directly related to CF. (That doesn't seem fair.)

Left unchecked, allergies absolutely will affect CF symptons & severity!

It was much harder when Jordan was a baby, a toddler, and even when he was in elementary school. They just don't do a good job of blowing noses or spitting out mucus when they cough it up. Also, as Jordan pointed out to me, they have been dealing with it since they were born, so they are just used to feeling that way. They don't know to tell us that they feel more congested or whatever other changes are taking place, so we have to just watch their behavior closely. Sometimes it's a guessing game at best!

Jordan has been on allergy meds since he was old enough to take them. We've had to change meds here and there over the years, but keeping the allergies under control has made a huge difference in his health.

We've done a lot of things around the house to decrease the amount of allergens in the air. We removed carpet, got leather furniture, etc. All changes have helped everyone in the household, because we all have pretty severe allergies.

Little ones are crawling/playing on the floor, so anything in the carpet is almost certainly going to be breathed into their little bodies. There are so many things about CF that we can't control, so I think it's very important to take care of the things that we can control.
