How do you know when...

...it's time to go on emzymes? I'm 25 yo F w/cf and I've never needed enzymes before (thankfully!) But more and more frequently I've been getting stabbing abdominal pains about 20 mins after I eat. The pain can get so bad that I have to curl up in a ball and is accompanied by terrible nausea. Just wondering if that is a sign I need to start thinking about enzyemes?

Thanks,
Dawn

Hmm...I'm not sure as I've always been on enzymes. I would say talk to your doc. Present your symptoms to him, and suggest that maybe you might need enzymes. See what he says. I know that if I forget to take mine with a meal, the next day I get really bad stomach cramps, and am always on the toilet.

It could be gall bladder. Are your stools loose/oily or any different? The pain alone doesnt mean its time for enzymes. Your doctor could tell you best & probably would want a stool sample in addition to other tests. That is the only way to know for sure what the cause is!

Yep I agree with JazzysMom, if you have loose and/or oily stools then it is likely enzymes you need. If it is just stabbing pain it could be gallbladder that could progress into pancreatitis. The nausea is a gallbladder attack symptom too. My mom would actually throw up from the nausea before she got her gallbladder removed. Best to talk to your doc.

I had an ulcer that did that to me. If you throw up something that looks like coffee grounds, then it probably means you have a bleeding ulcer. At any rate stabbing stomach pains are never a good sign; I suggest making an appointment with your doc as soon as possible; don't wait for the next CF center appointment.
