How do you know

I am very religous about taking my meds and doing my vest. Some days I wonder are they really working. HOw do you know when they are working? Is it by how much you bring up during your treatments or after ? Is it how you feel after your treatments? I will do my treatments right before I go to bed, the next morning I feel congested and cough like crazy while doin my pulmozyme, HS and vest. Is this normal?

What are other's experience with this? Do you cough and bring up a lot during your nebs and vest?

I know that my meds are working when my PFT's don't drop.

I don't normally have a very productive cough.... so that's a poor measurement for me.

But the fact that my health is stable and I don't decline (sometimes I even improve) is an indication that what I'm doing is effectively preventing infection.

For me I can tell if the meds are working by my breathing and my coughing. If I feel tight or closed off when I breathe and am having an extremely hard time when I cough and with getting stuff up I know there is an issue.

If I am able to do my treatments and I feel open and am able to breathe easily for the rest of the day - or for good portions of the day anyway - then I know it is doing the job. If I am short of breath with little to no exertion I know something is going on - either with my blood sugar or with my lungs and infection.

Also I get bouts of random chest pain throughout my back. If I do my vest or CPT therapies and I can feel those areas loosen/open/relax then I know the meds are helping and the CPT is helping. If the areas don't feel better then I know something needs to change.

Also my overall energy level is better when the meds are more effective. When they do their job - especially in the morning I notice a huge boost in energy - like taking ahot shower to wake you up sometimes my nebs and CPT are my hot shower lol.

Also about the coughing. I have been having a more productive cough at night the past few weeks, but usually with infections I have a more productive cogh in the morning first thing when I get up - and even for a few hours (during treatments and shortly after).

Take Care,
Lindsey

Hi Steph! Nice to see you on the boards again!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have a few measurements, that are not scientific but tell me what's going on. The main one, is the second I wake up, still be lying in bed, I usually have a coughing fit. The mornings I don't have a coughing fit first thing is when I know I'm doing something right. Vest 2x/day usually always helps me to have things much more under control, unless I'm actually sick and fighting an infection.
