How does Great Strides work?

My dd is now 2 and was diagnosed at 3 months old. Right after her diagnosis, I found out about the Great Strides walk that was to be held just two months later. I was so overwhelmed with the new diagnosis but felt a "calling" to participate. I too wasn't sure exactly what to do and felt a little strange "hitting" my friends and family up for money (it was definitely out of my comfort zone!). I went ahead and created a team and then asked just my family and very close friends to join. I then sent out an e-mail to everyone in my address book (using the Great Strides website suggestions) asking people to donate. Before I knew it, Bridgette's Buddies had 20 people walking! We raised almost $5,300.00 in two months I just couldn't believe it. It was so heart warming and really gave me hope.
So I say..."Just go for it!!" It definitely can't hurt and if not anything else, you will definitely have fun! Good Luck!

When I send out our emails and letters I have a note on the bottom encouraging people to participate/volunteer in a walk in their area if they're unable to donate financially. I've had friends contact their local CFF and volunteer the morning of the walk. My MIL and her sister help pass out food before an afterwards. We have people who show up to walk with us who aren't comfortable doing fundraising.
