how far do you go?

for those transplanted, how far do you go to keep your risk of infection down?

Do you never fly? Never eat mushrooms? Never have a glass of wine? Never go to the movies? Always wear a mask at the grocery store? Never go to the public gym? Never go in hot tubs? Stay away from children?

Just wondering how crazy people get as far as their role in preventing infection..this is assuming that you ADHERE TO YOUR MEDICATION/TREATMENT GUIDLINES 99.5% OF THE TIME.

Thanks!

I'm still waiting but I have a friend who is 19 years post transplant and she lives very normally just uses common sense like hand washing, avoiding anyone sick, etc. I know the first couple months your have to be really careful but after that I assume it's just using normal precautions

I fly, I dont like mushrooms so no biggie there, I dont drink but my g/f wants me to on my birthday, go to the movies all the time, dont wear a mask at the grocery store, do go to the gym, I dont go in hottubs or lakes, umm I stay away if a child is sick.

So I basically pretty much do what I want except I dont do lakes, hottubs or drink. Im really curious about how many of us occasionally drink or get drunk occasionally <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

The only things I avoid are hot tubs, sick children, and sushi. And I would never go in a lake anyway because it grosses me out.

I do everything else you asked about. I fly. I drink (in moderation). I eat what I want. I go to the gym. I have worn a mask exactly 1 time in the last six years. My doctor never even made me wear one to clinic in the first weeks/months post transplant. His line of thought was that I was going to be eventually exposed to germs and bacteria so better to do it early.

We get transplants to live life...not live life in a bubble. This process should make your quality of life improve 100%. It is easy to look at everything that could make you sick and avoid it, but in the end that will just make you paranoid. Just use common sense. Take your meds on time everyday. And keep those lungs in shape by workign out. That has been my recipe for success so far.

Im in agreement with everyone else on here.
I do like and eat mushrooms, not raw though, theyre always cooked.
I drink in moderation. Usually I never drink, maybe once in a blue moon and I maybe get drunk once a year and not on purpose...it always seems to happen on St. Patrick's day. I noticed that my tolerance went way down after tx.
I make sure to stay away from sickies and make sure all my friends get their flu shots.

But like summer said, we didnt get this transplant to live in a bubble, we got it to live life to the fullest. Just dont take them for granted, don't treat them badly and get out there and live like you're donor would want you to!

Since my transplant I have worn my mask only to clinic (and that is only to look good to my doc) and on planes. I go to the gym, go to school, I occasionally imbibe in an adult beverage, I go to the mall, and eat out all the time. I hate fungus, so that is not an issue and I avoid raw foods ( meats, fish, etc) I am going to school to be a PA so I am exposed to sick people all the time. I wil be wearing my mask more often during my ER and peds rotations though. I live with a 5 year old, so I am constantly exposed to all the typical kid stuff.
As for getting sick, it is going to happen, and it takes a bit longer to get over it, but as long as you are deligent about keeping close tabs with your clinic, everything should be ok!

I do fly, I have eaten mushrooms, I don't like wine but have had Schmirnoff/Wine coolers (but only two or three drinks in 4 years), I go to the movies fairly frequently (twice in the last 3 days), I don't wear a mask to the store unless it's the holidays and a lot of people are out, I don't go to the gym but that's only because I can't afford the prices, and I do avoid hot tubs. As for children, there is no way I can avoid them since I have a 5 year old son and 10 nieces and nephews.
