how long do you wait to give antibiotics for a cough?

With DS we were told to learn his cough. With the wet junkier, bronchial type of cough we're told to call right away and as always, increase cpt/vest treatments to "beat that cough out of him".

<br />When he was 2 months old he had a harsh cough and kept throwing up his formula. I'd taken him to the local peds clinic for a 2 month check and the doctor is also head of the local cf clinic. When I asked about the cough, I was told "they (meaning people wcf) cough, it's what they do". A couple weeks later we were in the city for a recheck with our primary cf doctor and pretty much got yelled at because DS had bronchitis and didn't we know he could end up back in the hospital. Increased treatments, a couple abx and he was fine. So to this day, I don't rely on the local peds or cf doctors even though the latter SHOULD know what to listen for.

thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. we started with the abx this morning. and lil hazy has had diarrhea twice with her first dose. can we even expect her cough to improve? or are the abx just preventative? her last throat culture did show staph but we were told that this is "normal" mouth bacteria?

Some people swear the antibiotic improves the cough. I think most of the time the cough is viral and the abs are more preventative (due to the increased mucus production). Did the doctor suggest probiotics during antibiotic use? It can help prevent the diarrhea.

Staph can indeed be considered "normal" oropharyngeal flora...however, it's when it plates out in high concentration that those with CF are considered to have colonized lungs. Ask your doctor what the approximate concentration is...
