How long does it take to get thrush?

Hi!

So, I started my pulmicort a couple days ago and all was going fine.... well, until I READ the medication side effects and stuff that come with it.... seems you have to rinse out your mouth immediately after using this, and drink water... but not the rinse water. would have been very nice to know. urgh! (serves me right for not reading the "instructions" before use, but who really does that with nebbed - non-antibiotic - meds?)

Anyway, I know I should know better since I wash my mouth out and brush my teeth with advair, and its essentially the same thing.... Anyhoo....

My question is: How long does/can it take to develop thrush from something like this? I have Nystatin on hand, and could start to take it, cause my throat has that scratchy, cruddy feeling, so it may already be starting. Or, is it just in my head now that I know it CAN happen?!? I don't have the white patches yet, but do have small red splotches on the roof of my mouth and just that yucky feeling when I swallow.

I was also out in severe dusty windy conditions all day today at a Pet-A-Palooza Fair for about 8 hours, so this could be the culprit too.

Start taking acidophilus pills and you probably won't get thrush. They are in the vitamin section of any store.

Sometimes I have thrush with antibiotics sometimes I don't. The first time I got it last yr it only took a few days to start feeling symptoms. It kind of feels like strep throat. I had a severely sore throat - where it was painful to swallow - the whole back of my throat was bright red - no white patches - and my tongue started getting this coating of white crap on it that was impossible to remove - even if I scrubbed with a toothbrush.
If your throat is feeling sore and you have red splotches in your mouth I would give the doc a call if you need/want something prescription wise to get rid of it. If you have something to take I would take it, but that is just me. Hopefully it isn't thrush, but if it is just don't let it get worse or you will be miserable. That happened to me the first time because I had no clue what thrush was <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">.

Hope your throat starts feeling better.

Hi,
do you neb the Pulmicort or is it the powder form, where you just take one deep breath with?
When nebbing anything like that (like colistin) I use a fluid nystatin afterwards which you keep in your mouth for 1-2 minutes and then swallow. When the antibiotic is affecting your natural mouth-bacteria for the "long" nebbing time, it will kill many of them and so the natural mouth-thrush has the possibility for overgrowth. I doubt,if taking natural supplements can prevent that.
If you do only take one deep breath it should be enough to rinse the remnants out of our mouth with water.
Just to be save in your situation now I would take a fluid nystatin for some days nevertheless.

I've had thrush too. And the 1st thing I do is rinse my mouth out with vinegar. Doesn't taste pleasant! Some can't handle it!
But-its a safe remedy. And an old remedy. If the thrush has gone on for a while untreated I've found that the vinegar doesn't work. And I have to use a med.
But if it works great-one less pill to have to put in my body.

For me it takes me about 4 days to develop mild thrush. I'm bad for not rinsing out all the time when I take my Symbicort. When I remember I'll rinse, but sometimes I forget. My thrush usually consists of a mild sore throat for a couple of days and then wierdly enough it disappears.

Thanks, everyone.

I am nebbing the pulmicort, and it does say on the sheet from CF pharmacy to rinse mouth, so I assume I should do so.

I also wonder though if you swallow as you're DOING the neb, won't that be pretty bad too? I mean, you're never supposed to swallow advair after the "puff". Hmmmm.... just another thing to throw into the pot.... anyone know? Just curious cause all the rinsing in the world won't matter if you're swallowing the stuff.

Thanx!!

Hey Sonia-

Maybe you could rinse with a germ killing rinse-like Listerene instead of plain water. Or apple cinder vinegar. Those things are supposed to be good at destroying bacteria/germs and residues. Better than water I'd think.

I take advair twice daily and I never got thrush. After each puff I rinse my mouth with Biotene mouth wash. This is super. It will get rid of any white patches or white films on your tongue. GREAT STuff
has some good enzymes that kill bacteria and probably fungi too.

it says it is for dry mouth which is related to thrush but it prevents thrush. I should know I am transplant patient and thrush is popular in the community of txs
