How long do your kids go without having a bowel movement.
My daugther hasn't gone in 4 days. I'm feeling anxious about it. She seems to be fine, belly aches now and then but still no poop. What is the longest your kids have gone without pooping? She drinks Pediasure with fiber everyday and Carnation VHC but not as much food as we would like.
She is a picky eater but when she does it eat it is usually something with fiber and fat. How long should we wait before calling the doctor?

Sorry for the many messages, I apologize I got a message that it did not post

I would check with your doctor and see about giving her miralax or something to get things moving along. Especially with the belly aches.

Make sure she's drinking plenty of water too... the fiber is of limited value without water to bind to it.

I agree with adding some Miralax.

Day number 5. Still no poop. She tried a while ago and sat there for a long time but nothing. She started crying and saying it hurts. I hate to see her hurting. We started her on Miralax 3 days ago. Still nothing. She started going to school a week ago. She doesn't drink much water at school. At home I offer water all the time but at school I guess she is having fun and forgets to drink water. Her teachers are nice and are helping me with making sure she eats etc. but is not the same. Should I try supositories? I can try. When should I consider taking her to the E.R.?

Five days! Yeah I imagine she is pretty uncomfortable, and at this point the longer it is, the harder it will be.

Does her stomach feel hard, distended, painful if you push on it? I would consider calling her dr for some guidance on what to do before taking her to the er.

Are you encouraging high-fiber fruits and veggies? That should help too along with the increased clear liquids & Miralax but more might be needed at this point. Trying a glycerin suppository seems reasonable at this point but I think checking in with her dr would be a good idea even if she's successful in going to get a plan for keeping her regular.

The longer you wait, the more concerned I would be about contributing to DIOS (Distal Intestinal Obstruction Syndrome) which is common with CF (see http://www.cfmedicine.com/htmldocs/CFText/dios.htm). In addition, the longer stool sits in the colon, the more water is absorbed by the colon and the more firm the stool becomes. I'm not advising you to do so, but I give my daughter a suppository and/or Pedia-Lax at the first sign of discomfort (i.e., no longer than 2 days)...perhaps once every few months or more...
