How many enzymes do you take?

Just wondering............

Briceton was just recently bumped up to 3 Creon5 and 3 Pancrecarb MS-4 (total of 6 enzymes) with formula and ALL meals, including snacks! This puts him at a daily total of 42+ enzymes a day! This is his maxed out dosage with his current age and weight.

However, even with such a high dose of enzymes, he continues to have severe diarrhea. We went in yesterday for an endoscopy, sigmoid, and bronch (increase cough) to see if there are any other concerns that need addressed. We should get the results of the biopsy back in a few days.

Also, do any of the CFers here (adult, child) have problems breaking down there food? Briceton poops EVERYTHING out that goes in his mouth, looking the same way it went in! I know some food, like corn and some beans don't break down. But Briceton poops (<b>TMI)</b> pasta, meat, and many vegetables out looking the same way as it did on his plate!

DS takes 5 pancrease-mt4s with meals 3-4 with snacks.

I do know of a family in town whose 1 1/2 year old had similar issues and the mother noticed a marked difference when they added mucomyst orally.

Otherwise, have they tried other enzyme brands? Is he on zantac or another acid reducer for reflux -- if not that might help the enzymes work better.

Hi Sherry,

Although my daughter was thought to be pancreatic sufficient, she's been taking 2-3 Creon5 because her weight gain was sluggish. Over the last month she's been having excessive amounts of BMs (like 6-8 unformed ones daily). Our doctor just upped her to 4 with meals, 3 with snacks and it seems to have done the trick. She also takes prevacid.

But I wanted to say that our doctor said that if the enzymes didn't help we'd be heading down the testing route you are doing. His biggest concern was that she might also have celiac's disease and need to be on a gluten free diet. I don't know what the cross diagnosis rates are for CF and Celiac's, but food in the stool is definitely a cause for concern.

I hope the tests come back favorably.

I do not understand...........all of his biopsies came back negative (endo & sigmoid, still waiting on bronch) I am relieved (thankful) but still don't understand!!!!

Why is his body not breaking down food? Why has he had only <b>1</b> formed bowel movement his entire life? Why are they only green & yellow? Why do they constantly have whole food in them? Why are they constantly runny, mucousy, foul, greasy, and extremely huge? I was really hoping to have the answers to these questions.......could it be something besides his intestines? Like the liver or gallbladder?

Granted he is pancreatic insufficient, but increasing his enzyme dosage has never show any effects with his bowel movements. Is this just the actions of CF, even with enzyme therapy? I don't know, but back to the drawing board I guess, GI doc said she would talk to clinic and see where they wanted to go from here..........are there any other possible explanations?

Also, with the constant diarrhea and stools full of food, Briceton has NO trouble gaining weight (thank God)! He is in the 56% for his weight! Weird huh?

And yes, Briceton does take Prevacid, as well as the other common CF medications!
