How many time a year do you take antibiotics?

Just curious. My boyfriend is on oral antibiotic again for a flare up. He took last one for 2 weeks and finished it a month ago. It´s too soon to have a flare up again? He used to have 2-3 flare ups a year. But this year had 4.
I was wondering if it´s normal to have to take them so close together or if he should be taking something else as preventive treatment. His numbers are fine 89 when the flare up and 94 after antibiotic.
He doesn´t use tobi as he doesn´t have pseudomona so far. But I was thinking about zitromax...or maybe hipertonic saline....
I guess my question is how many times are year do you have a flare up/ how many times a year do you take antibiotics and for how long?

It's quite common for CFers to be on oral antibiotics on an ongoing basis, depending on which bugs we culture. I take Azithromycin every other day, year-round. In the normal population, that antibiotic is only used in the short-term (5 days I think) but in CFers it's a useful preventive medication.

I wish there was a simple answer for you. It sounds like you're worried that your boyfriend may be worsening based on the number of flareups he's had. The thing with CF is that there's no rulebook. Some of us have really junky coughs year-round and wheeze constantly, others have only one particular season in which they have the most trouble. Just because he's having more flare ups now doesn't necessarily mean that this is setting a trend for the future. Perhaps maybe he's just culturing a different bug and he and the docs haven't hit upon the right solution for keeping it under control.

Try not to micromanage or worry too much. I know it can be tempting for caregivers and concerned loved ones to want to be involved in every little detail, but that's not possible. Only he knows how he's feeling and whether or not what he's experiencing is out of norm.

I have always been on some sort of antibiotic year round. Currently I am on zithro every other day and I am on tobi every other month. Definitely no rules as light n life posted. Some years are better for me than others Depends on what bug I catch and how bad it is.

I am on 2 sometimes 3 abx full time year round. I take bactrim and Zithromax daily and Tobi every other month. I add Cipro into the mix if I am getting sick. It's common to take preventative measures. I have been taking Bactrim for as long as I can remember. Like everyone else has said. It does not mean that he is worsening at all. Some of us go through stages <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> And sometimes it takes a few tries to find the abx that works. I was on Keflex for a while then stopped responding to it so I was switched to Zithro and now I do much better.
