How many times a day do you do CPT for your child?

Hi, all,
Sam has finished 14 days of IV antibiotics due to culturing pseudomonas and is doing great. However, immediately after going off of antibiotics he came down with a cold. He has felt fine through all of this, and the cold is not too bad. My question is based on what I am reading on some other posts - culturing bacteria doesn't necessarily mean there is lung involvment? It just means there's some trouble-makers lurking in the lungs that could cause problems later or if not monitored carefully? Also, how often do you do CPT? When Sam had his first sign of cold symptoms, I wanted to do CPT four times a day, and his doctor said that was not really necessary if he does not have congestion in his chest, but doing albuterol four times a day would be good. I had determined that I was going to do CPT three times a day from now on, just because of the pseudomonas culture. I figure his lungs have proven that they are a place where bacteria wants to hang out. How often do the rest of you do CPT if there is no signs of congestion - twice a day, three times?
Thanks,
rosesixtyfive, mother of Sam, ddf508, 6 months old, and Robin, 4 years old, no CF

Twice a day as maintenance, three to four times a day during an exacerbation. We use a combination of vest, flutter, and manual CPT. Best of luck!

I agree with Tonya -- 2x maintenance, 3-4 when sick.

The thing I disagree on is that culturing bacteria doesn't mean lung involvement. Normal lungs don't culture pseudomonas and other CF specific bugs. The very fact that these bugs have taken residence in a CFers lungs means that there is some lung involvement, in my opinion.

Hey there,

I definitely agree with these other two that culturing those bacterias means there is lung involvment. The bacteria like CF lungs because they have a more difficult time clearing things out, so they are a perfect place to colonize, leading to scaring.

As for CPT. When he is sick doing it 3 or 4 times a day is a good idea and doing is that many times when he is healthy isn't going to hurt, it will probably help in the long run because it just helps losen things up and keep things clear. He probably only needs it twice a day, but if he doesn't protest to doing it four times, why not?
