How much do you guys cough up during physio?

So as you guys know I have started an excercise regime...which includes 30 mins of cardio, either the treadmill or the excercise bike. Anyways i usually find it pretty easy...and I am slowly climbing my way to the elite "fit" status hehe.

Anyways, lately i have been doing a lot of autogenic drainage. My lung function is in the 80's, i don't feel congested, but after a good half hour of a good session, i cough up like a crap load of stuff (half a small cup). I feel pretty spent but so good afterwords. It's just crazy that all that crap is in there...and I'm up in the numbers..

So a question...for those of you with lower fev1's and a vest or some other type of clearance device. How much do you get up per session? Has anyone here tried autogenic drainage AND a vest, and can compare results? I'm curious..

And on the supplement side. I have been reading some immunity stuff and i was pretty shocked. A lot of it had cf written all over it. Immunity and arganine, glutamine, EFA's, selenium, vit a, zinc, GSH etc. It was saying that the immune system has a huge metabolic cost on the body, and that any prolonged activation of the immune system can have deleterious affects on the body. It basically strips the body of amino acids and nutrients it needs to fight off the infection. This also leads to poor absorption of food (among a lot of other things..including insulin sensitivity) which further puts the body into a nutritional deficiency.

So my next plan is to incorporate supps to feed my immune system, while the same time providing enough antioxidants to reduce the effect of stupid neutrophils.

So we're looking at glutamine, arganine (round two!), cystine, DHA (already on that) etc.

One good source of this is undenatured whey. I'm also gonna add a heavy duty green food type product, and further increase the amino acids involved in the immune system.

There are also some extracts i have seen that can help activate the other chloride channel..(forgot the name....) but more on that when i get it.

I'll post in my blog when this all comes to fruit.

Cheers,
Kiel

Hi Ender,

sorry, i can't answer your question.

But, in regards to the extracts you mentioned in helping activate the other chloride channel. I think the extract you talking about is called isothynates(sp?).

Which is extracted from the seed of a paw paw, there is loads of info on the research of this and all the other extra supplements you mentioned on the site sharktank.org.

You probabaly already know of it, but i thiught i might mention it anyway.

Please keep us posted on your regime of exercise and mostly supplements. Its somthing i am very interested in, for my daughter. Although she is still young (turns 2 on 7 Dec) yeah, its somthing i'm thinking of doing in the future.

Any info would be great. Thanks for sharing.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

i rarely cough up anything during physio, even when im really productive. im still very sick at the moment, heaps of gunk coming up but as soon as the physio started this morning, nothing. it just makes my lungs seize up. only thing that makes me get stuff up is exercise or just lying down. we dont have the vest here so i cant answer your other question.

get some protein shakes into ya! everyone should be on those.

Wow you have a serious regimen going, thats awesome.
To answer your original question, my fev1 is 78 and I get up about 1/4 cup of mucus with physio, on a good day using the vest and breathing techniques. I used to get nothing up, and didn't realize that you had to force yourself to cough to get it out, they never taught us the right way.
Drainage never really helped me. I like the vest, now that I know how to do it correctly.

As far as the supplements you wrote about, I've seen a naturopath/fitness doctor and was really into research for a while, and learned about most of the stuff you mentioned. I'm on efa's, lots of antioxidants, I was on all the amino acids (I stopped them and lots of other stuff for the pregnancy). I take a green drink, its by a Dr. Richard Schulze-a naturo doctor, he's online and he has a catalogue. He has a line of high-absorption supplments and herbs. He has a green drink called Superfood. It's great, my whole family practically takes it. (Its the wheat grass, sea algae, and veggie/full spectrum drink) Anyway, figured I'd pass it on b/c it helps me.

Hey, actually i was referring to the plant Phyllanthus acidus and its extract. It is shown to increase cAMP and Ca(2+) (the other transporters) among other things. Here is the link..

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=17065237&query_hl=30&itool=pubmed_docsum
">http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/en...0&itool=pubmed_docsum
</a>
The bad part is I am having a hell of a time trying to find this extract. I've looked for a long time. In the article it said that these results can be reproduced with the isolated components adenosine, kaempferol, and hypogallic acid. So, i was looking for supplements that contained these, and here is what i got so far...
Wild Bear's Garlic (adenosine) <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.webvitamins.com/product.aspx?id=18226
">http://www.webvitamins.com/product.aspx?id=18226
</a>Pomegranate juice (gallic acid) <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.webvitamins.com/product.aspx?id=21892
">http://www.webvitamins.com/product.aspx?id=21892
</a>Ginkgo biloba (kaempferol) <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.vitacost.com/JarrowFormulasGinkgoBiloba2ForThePriceOf1
">http://www.vitacost.com/Jarrow...Biloba2ForThePriceOf1
</a>

Perhaps another extract from the same species of plant will do, I don't know though. Perhaps if i can find a cheap extract of another species, i can just combine it with supplements mentioned. It can't hurt, i guess.

So, for my new regiment, I'll start with said supplements, plus the undernatured whey <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.sourcenaturals.com/sitesearch.html?terms=whey">http://www.sourcenaturals.com/...search.html?terms=whey</a> for instance (there are so many on the market...this was the cheapest i could find). After i get adjusted to those, i will increase the amino acids i take, green foods etc. I'll make a complete list as i get to it.

Anyways, take it easy,
Kiel

*Oh another good extract that helps stimulate cAMP is Coleus Forskohlii Extract.

I dont really cough up all that much while doing the vest either. I do however cough up more when i use the flutter . I also find that when i use my peak flow, its good for a sputum appearance or two.
Oh and my last fev1 ( after my embolization 4 weeks ago ) , was 40%.
