It's not uncommon for me to see blood in my sputum in the morning, but it's a very minimal amount. "Streaking" I would say. Since my doc put me on advair this has decreased somewhat. Also, I noticed when I stopped taking ibuprofen so regularly, it decreased as well.

Slightly more significant bleeders might happen maybe once every 6 months, but there has never been more than maybe 1-2 milliLiters. Typically they happen when I'm about to go to sleep. I'm not entirely sure where the blood is coming from. It may be lung, but it also seems like it might be from way back in the sinuses. I guess given that advair has helped, it's probably from the lung.

Hi, In the last 6 months I have had hemoptysis about 4 or 5 times. The frequency depends on how my lungs are doing. It happens more often when I have an infection or when I have been coughing a lot. Sometimes it just happens out of the blue. I hate when it happens. I know it is normal with CF but I have a lot of anxiety with hemoptysis. The most I have ever coughed up was about 1 cup. Very scary for me. Most of the time it is anywhere from 1 teaspoon to a few tablespoons. My first hemoptysis occurred around age 11. Over the years I have learned that when I stay calm, try not to cough too much, and sit upright I cough up less blood and a clot will form.

I would generally cough up about 1 tablespoon of fresh blood a couple times between each hospital stay. Then I would have a blood blow out (twice) in which I would cough up 1/2 a cup for 3 days in a row. Then I would go in and get embolized. No blood (not including streaks once) since the last procedure in March.
