How to choose preschool and school

From a cf perspective...
- sick policy
- bathroom procedure and how much sticklers they are for handwashing.
- indoor air quality report results
- condition and general cleanliness of toys and facilty
- no daycare at same facility

From a non-cf perspective there are many things to consider but this is not the forum for that so I'll not get into detail other than a great question to ask is what do they do when two kids are fighting over a toy. I find this gets to the route of their teaching style and whether they are teaching communication skills or just trying to entertain your child.

auntco: in Poland a universal preschool (tied to the public school system) teaching certification is required...

thanks for all the info - I'll make a list and try to look for the best I can find near home

Hi There! I hope your family is getting along quite nicely with the new baby in the house!!

I started my daughter in preschool last september. I chose a 12 person Montessori based out of someone's home because I thought that would minimize the cold exposure, and I am sure it did, however...my daughter has had 7 or 8 colds anyway. 2 were chest colds, of which I got as well...I actually try to get every cold she gets now to see if it is progressing normally and it has worked She needed antibiotics 2 times, but I think that was for sinuses more than lungs. By the way, a few of her classmates needed antibiotics for bacterial bronchitis infections, so I guess we are faring well!!

Anyway, the teachers try to be vigilant, but

1.) 2 kids have asthma/allergies, so you never know if these kids are sick or not. If I had my choice, I would get in a class without asthma/allergy but I know that is impossible.

2.) Also, these kids have older brothers/sisters, so whatever those kids get exposed to, they bring it to their homes and their preschoolers get exposed and bring it to school.

3.) They send kids home if they have a runny nose or productive cough, however, it is my understanding you are super contagious right before the symptoms start, so you really can't control the spread of viruses then!

As a result of all of these colds, we pulled my daughter out for January and most of February. We just put her back in. Apparently ALL preschoolers get sick all of the time the first year they are in school as their immunities need to build up. During these colds, what has REALLY worked for us more than anything is Hypertonic Saline. I really believe this has kept her colds to the normal duration without infections starting to brew.

Good luck with your decision.

Edan.

here it is a form that is filled out by your doctor that states special requirements and arrangements to be made at school for your child. Usually it includes avoiding stale water (cut flowers, aquariums etc), desinfection of toys, faucets etc, allowing to drink in class and go to the bathroom when needed.
