how to give a baby that gags enzymes?

Yeah we were told to try to stay away from dairy products and use acidic fruits. However, when it got to the point that she would only take it in the Cool Whip her doctor said "do what you have to do - it's better than not taking them at all".

I can relate to that, my four year old did that at about 1 1/2 years old, we would have to force him to take them, it is just a phase your daughter is going thru, you feel like your going crazy I know, but just remember it will get better!! He would throw up and scream and shut his mouth, it was terrible!

Good luck!

Have you talked to your childs dietician at clinic or maybe the therepist that come in to see your child while your there ? Ask the therapist about the gag there are also books you can read about it under feeding and swallowing . Look for " Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding Assesment and Mangament "by Joan Arvedson and Linda Brodsky .Very good book and there are also thing's on internet as well but a

SPEECH THEREPIST can help too....
my son used to gag alot but not as much he does the Viokase and the Croen 5 he takes the beads when eat's by mouth and we put it in what ever he eat's ,just the bead's . He's 2 years old .
Oh try putting the spoon from one of the side's of the mouth instead of going straight in the mouth put in on side which ever is stronger. You may also want to try a what they call a NUKE brush and do oral motor therapy and a Chewy Tube for oral motor ask about that and they should also show you how to do it .Both chewy tube and nuke brush are cheap but you can't just buy them look for speacial need's book 's and equipment and you will find them Beyond play.com is good place and cheap..

Hi. My name is kristen and I have a 15 month old daughter w/CF. She was diagnosed at 4 months. When we brought her home from her first clinic visit I was crazy, all of this was new to me! I tried feeding it to her in applesauce. Ok that did not go well. She had never eatin solid foods before. So, I decided to open the enzymes and pour them in her mouth and wash down with juicy juice. I just bought a cheap small gerber bottle and sqeezed in her mouth and made sure they all went down. It was wonderful! Now that she is older it is a little harder, but it still works for now. She did so good this way! She did gag snd vomitt a couple of times ( she has severe reflux) it did'nt take long to get use to it. I hope this helps.

Although I sympathise with you, I can't help but to tell you that there is no option. I mean, I was always told to give enzymes with the same food each and every time. THat apple sauce was the #1 choice and that throwing up was never an option either. With that in mind, maybe you are making more of an issue of it , then your child. Maybe. I know my physician always said, " teach her now , and don't baby her cause it will only be worst on her later." I have always enforced this and just shy of her second b-day, she was swallowing her enzymes whole with no water and she can now at five years of age, manouver her enzymes around her food in her mouth, and still make conversation.
I know my sisters daughter, was a puker without CF, and she was always saying "talk to your belly, tell it not to be sick", I used to laugh all the time. I mean, with my daughter it was, "take this, like it or not, period". Anyway, good luck just wanted to give a different perspective, and maybe don't make a big deal out of it and eventually your child will get over her (attention) seeking way. YOu know alfter all, it isn't the norm for children to have to do this. Maybe a reward after wards will tantilyze her to do it without a fuss.

When I was a baby my mom always broke the capsules open and mixed the smaller white things (for lack of a better term )in with my food (specifically, cottage cheese). I never even knew they were there. You could try that if you haven't already. I would imagine this would work just as well with the applesauce.

Heh, that'll work. I probably used to call 'em something, too...but it's probably embarassing, so I'd rather not remember

HI. I am 33 years old now, but when I was little my mother use to mix up the enzymes with Bosco. She would empty the capsules in a small little bowl and mix it with the chocolate stuff. I do not think they make Bosco anymore, but maybe you can use Hershey's syrup and smash the little enzymes inside of the capsule.

Good Luck. This post brought back fond memories of eating my chocolaty treat before meals!

try a different brand of applesauce or add a dash of salt to it for a new taste. I started getting lazy at one point and started adding the enz beads to whatever we were feeding. BIG MISTAKE! He no longer wanted the applesauce. Consistancy worked the best for us. As long as I give applesauce prior to every meal (consistantly) he would open wide and take them like a champ. GOOD LUCK!
