My daughter has failure to thrive down to .785tile weight 3% for height. One GI suggeste that she have a pancreatic stimulation test for pancreatic insufficiency. We want to this during bronchoscopy so she is sedated 1 time and since her gi and pulmonologist are at 2 different hospitals we have a 2nd opinion and the pulmonologists hospital and she feels fecal elastace is more accurate than the pacreatic stimulation test. What test did you do to determine pancreatic insufficiency? we are going to repeat the fecal elastace in the meantime.d

...been a member on here since 2006 and have never heard anyone mention pancreatic stim. Is it a newer test? If so I would read the journal articles on it to see that it is a proven diagnostic test. And to make sure the doctor who is asking to perform the test isn't the only person doing it LOL. Fecal elastase is a test where the feces is collected for 3 days I believe. My understanding is that for the fecal fat test it takes 3 days and you have to keep track of how much fat is eaten to compare to how much fat is extreted. The fecal elastace test is a 1 day test. One of the GIs fealt the fecal Elastace was the most accurate. The other GI fealt that the pancreatic stimulation test was more accurate, but that most hospitals don't have the capability to do this test. The GI that feels Elastace is most accurate did admit her hospital cannot do the pancreatic stim with the "best" procedure because her hospital could not get a manufactorer to make the tube she needed for the test. This doctor also has to send the specimen to another hospital on dry ice for testing. I am not sure if the pancreatic stimulation test is most accurate, but more difficult to do or if the elastace is all that is needed and that is why the pancreatic stimulation is less common. We are going to do another fecal elastace and if it is borderline then consider the pancreatic stimulation or maybe it is best to just try enzymes at that point not sure?
