Husbands in Hospital

Last time he was in the hospital was back September 2011. He is in again. His lung function is 17% and we are going to talk to the lung transplant specialists today so that he can be listed as active again on the list. I'm worried right now because his x-ray showed a pocket of something in his chest. His Dr. just sent him for a CT scan to see if it is an infection of something or pnemonia. They said that if the pocket gets too much bigger and is an infection that they might have to go in and drain it (which poses the risk of punctering a lung she said) So that made me worry even more. I would just like if I could get some prayers or good wishes. He also weighs 103, any advice on how to make him plump up besides eating a lot and ensure shakes..they don't seem to work..he drinks like 4 a day

It's hard talking to people about these sort of things. I don't want to upset you. Maybe that's why this board is a tad slow. Sensitive topics and stuff. Anyway, 17% is quite low, but as long as there is a % and he's in good hands, then that's good. It's also good if he's still talking or communicating in some way (white board). It's even better if YOU stay optimistic and positive! So do that!
Are they certain about the pocket? My grandad had a growth on the exterior of one of his lungs and they thought it was cancer. Well, turns out it was nothing that serious. They still never got back with him on what it actually was and it's been about 4 months now. Point is, wait and see what their results say. If it is a pocket or infection, it's good that they caught it early. If it's something that can wait, they'll probably ingnore it until he's better.
I'm not sure if there even is a way to fatten the fella up when he is in the hospital. I think it's just inevitable that people will lose weight as long as they are there. It's good he's taking in something though. Out of the hospital, just make him eat more and more often.
My best wishes to both of you. From what I could gleam from your writing, it sounds like he'll pull through. Don't forget, positive and optimistic!

Hi-I'm so sorry to hear about your hubby. Just wanted to see how things were going? I pray all is going well, and things are improving. I know it is scary for you,,,I can relate. My hubby's been through a lot over the years. He had his lung collapse twice within a month's time. But things have actually improved since then (that was in 2006). I thought the worst, but always had hope and prayed constantly. He's tough-as I'm sure your hubby is. He lost a lot of weight...and it concerned me.My husband used to do scandi shakes, but now has been doing 2 packets of instant bfast every morning...and milk-he loves milk. I know it can cause more mucus buildup...but seems to help his weight. Has your hubby done the hypertonic saline? I'm sure he has,,,but just wanted to ask. It seemed to really help my husband a lot. He got on that after his lung surgery in 06, and his weight has increased and seems to do better.I'm praying for you and him, and hope things are going ok. I'm here for you-I know it's not easy being a young wife to the man you love with CF. It's very hard, but I know you're there for him, by his side, and that's what he needs most.
