Hyperpigmentation/Brown patches

Ethan has had a few small discolored spots on his trunk. First it started a very small one on his lower back that we assumed was a birth mark. Then another very small darker bluish/black one showed up and the doctor assumed it was another birth mark. Well, this past April we went to Florida and we all got a little too much South Florida sun Although he was not burnt, when we came inside I noticed 2 fairly large brown patches (one on his chest and one on his back) I originally thought it was where I missed with sunblock as it looked like maybe finger marks. Well, here it is June and the patches are still there. They are lighter, but still there. His pulmo looked at them (as we were leaving) and didn't think they were anything to worry about (but this was awhile ago). He does have sensitive skin (a family trait but when I've searched the internet, I come up with hyperpigmentation (with over 100 causes). I'm wondering if there is a connection between CF (or CF meds) and these "patches". They almost look like a pregnancy "mask".

Sorry, this was longer than I intended. Just curious.

Thanks!

Amanda

When the marks started appearing, had he recently been put on a new med that might have discoloration side effects? That's my only thought. The only med I know of that can cause discoloration of the skin is clofazimine, but not necessarily in splotches - it can color the whole body to a darker color. Just having CF won't change the color of your skin.

Cipro can cause hypersensitivity to the sun which means you'll get sunburned pretty quickly, but this med doesn't connect to getting splotches that stay I don't think. Never heard of it.

I'd see a dermatologist to make sure these new marks are okay to have, especially since they're not going away and they seem strange to you.

Thanks CowTown. At the time, he may have been or just gotten off of some AB's...but nothing out of the ordinary. He has clinic Wednesday, so I'm going to have her really look at them and see she thinks we should have them checked out.

Again, thanks!

I had surgery many years ago and a darker patch appeared on my right side/hip. The doctors though it was odd but quickly dismissed it. To clarify, I had surgery done on my abdomen, and literally right after the bandages came off, I had this brown patch around where the drain was. Maybe 6" across, oval shaped, and markedly darker than my other skin. Here I am 15ish years later and I have no idea what could have caused this, or why it's still here. But, it doesn't hurt, and that's more than I can say for a lot of other things, so I haven't bothered looking into it.
