My daughter began doing hypertonic saline treatments a few months ago. She has been wearing contacts for sports and recently she has been getting really dry eyes. The other day the contacts seemed to really stick to her eyes when she tried to take them out right after during her night treatment which includes hypertonic saline. After a whole lot of regular saline in her eyes we got the contacts out. I am wondering the hypertonic saline dehydrated the contacts. Should she put them in after her morning treatment and take them out before the night treatment?

Hi, i work for an Optometrist, I can't say for sure if the hypertonic is drying out her eyes, or contacts, but we recommend not wearing contacts in a shower, or pool, and not having them in when using products like hairspray and perfumes. So i would assume, the hypertonic steam is probably getting into the contacts some. Just to err on the safe side she should take them out when doing treatments, and maybe even use a rewetting drop to rinse her eyes a bit before putting them in. When taking them out they will always come out easier if she wets them with rewetting drops first... And if she's doing treatments late in the day, have her just wear glasses after and give her eyes a break from the contacts. Two hours at the end of the day with no contacts in before sleep is highly recommended.

I have dry eye anyway, just from medications in general. I know I always had trouble wearing my contacts whenever I had them in while doing my Hypertonic Saline or TOBI nebs, especially if you are using a Pari Neb since the smoke comes right up across the eyes. I usually just took mine out before those treatments, if I didn't then I would have to take them out & re-rinse them so I could put them back in. I remember wearing my glasses and having to wash my lens off after each TOBI treatment because it would have a film on them. So I dont know if it is making her eyes overall dry, but the HS & TOBI can cause irriation while wearing contacts. Always use rewetting drops before trying to take them out, helps to not rip them. Also if she is having dry eye in general, instead of regular rewetting drops, try Refresh Tears. They work really well.
