We just spent a week in the hospital , Madison had a mucus plug /phnemonia they couldn't decide, but befor they released us her doc came in and said spray this in her nose then suck it out ( they had been using saline and using the super sucker attached to the wall cause thats the only way they could get the boogers out) NeilMEd hypertonic nasal mist buffered 2.7%solution. For the people that dont know shes only 3 mths, i only use this stuff when she cant breathe out of her nose. but when i do use it she screams horribley i'm not sure if im doing it right or not 2 drops then suck it out, some times the snot sucker has a hard time sucking it all up , i hate doing this to my baby but shes alot better afterwards could any one tell me if im doing it right or wrong ? is there a better way?

I'm so sorry she ended up in the hospital! I hope she is doing much better now.

There are a couple kinds of saline you can use. There are the drops and there is a 'spray' that comes in a much bigger bottle. The spray will put more up into the nose and is more of a mist rather than drops. The spray will go up deeper into the nasal cavity and is likely to loosen up more congestion, and maybe will make it easier for you to get it all out with the suction bulb. eta> whichever kind of saline you use, it will work better if you give it a bit of time to soften the gunk up before sucking it back out, and turn her to her side or lean her forward if she gets 'gaggy' while you do it.

It is also COMPLETELY normal for babies to scream bloody murder when you use the bulb thing on them. Don't worry... you are not hurting her! The fact that you are getting gunk out and providing her with noticeable relief is what is important, although it is so hard seeing them cry like that.

As a side note, make sure you are doing a good job sterilizing it once you are done... that's the one thing I always hated about those bulb things- how hard they were to really keep clean. The ones you could open up were easier. I'd wash them, soak in soapy water for a while and then sterilize it w/ rubbing alcohol (if they are boilable that is probably even better... I didn't know about Emily's cf back then so did not try that.)

DS did the same thing. At the hospital they used saline and suction. At home we used simply saline nasal spray and the dreaded bulb syringe which he HATED. His nose never ever ran, just had thick boogies stuck up there. Was a godsend when at the age of 4 he learned how to do sinus rinse and get that nastiness out.
