My question is... if 7% was studied and is safe, how the hell is LESS going to cause damage??</end quote>

Maybe less is less sterile??? More damp? I don't know!

I don't blame you for being wary given what your doctors are saying, but it sounds like they're being overly-cautious and quite frankly... ridiculous. I had trouble with the 7% too. I could barely breathe it in without coughing my brains out, and I was vomiting regularly because of how hard I was coughing and gagging.

If you have trouble with the 7%, you have every right to use 3% or anything else you like. I say give these doctors CF lungs and tell them to inhale 7%. If it was possible, I'd do it. Because it's crap.

I personally, would tell you to get the 3%. Chances are, they're not going to do a test on the 3%, since they already tested the 7%. I cannot think of a SINGLE reason the 3% would be "unsafe"... it actually makes me laugh out loud to read it. Ridiculous nonsense. Furthermore, I've been doing 3% for... a year, maybe? And have had no health problems or new bacteria pop up, or anything else like that.

If the 7% is really causing you more trouble than you'd like, go for a lower percentage.

If anything would be "unsafe" it would be the higher percentages simply because of how harsh they are. They can be really be less than pleasant. For instance, if someone gets a bleed, they are instructed to stop using the saline because it'll only exacerbate the problem. Something less harsh is not going to be more dangerous.

Again, if you're still wary, ask the doctor what in the hell could make a lower percentage unsafe. See if they can give you a real answer. If not, chances are, they're just being unnecessarily "safe" so they can cover their own @ss. It really is outright ridiculous. There are CFers all over the place that are being given 3% (or other lower percentages) by pharmacies directly. Myself included.

I'm only so passionate about this because it's one of the stupidest things CF care-related I've heard in a long while. That and I know exactly how it is to have real trouble tolerating the 7%. You shouldn't have to keep taking it while it's hurting you because your doctor thinks it's "unsafe." Bull.

My CF Dr., Glenda Patterson started me on 3% Hypertonic saline 6-7 yr ago. I use 15 ml a day. Made by Dey, 15 ml. plastic cont. Have had excellent productive cough. My Fev1 6 yr. ago was 28% have been holding at 41 for a while. Do a 15 min. mile with a grade of 4 on treadmill for 2 miles. Not to bad for a old guy like me. Will be 60 in Feb. of 08.

I think someone is feeding you a crock of crap. The higher the % salt the more you cough. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure this out, if you are coughing too much or it irritates when you use 7 %, cut back to a lower % salt.

I worked in Nuclear Med. for 35 yr. and wondered some times how a few of them got through Med. school????? if you know what I mean.
