My daughter is 18 months and in the HS study. I am positive that she has the 7% solution and not the placebo. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Anyways, HS seems to be irritating at first, but after a while it calms down. I think the possible benefits of HS outweigh any risks and therefore I felt comfortable putting her on it. She has been on it for 6 months and is doing great. She got over several colds without abx which I attribute to the HS. She is on abx now with staph, but there were only a minor # of colonies - probably would have been many more if not for the HS thinning her mucus.

As always, do what you think is best. I will tell you though -- the hesitation you may feel because everything is "normal" right now and you want to keep it that way as long as possible ie: why do treatments when you aren't having problems? -- well, I fought that as well, but have found that the more I do to prevent infection, the better I feel. At least when Cassidy cultured staph the first time, I could say to myself - I did all I could. You know? Yuo just have to realize that all of these things - as heartbreaking as they are at first - become routine. It is just another part of the routine.

No matter what you decide - it is the best choice for you and your child.

Hugs to you.

My daughter is turning 4 and is not using HS. She does use pulmozyme and I feel it is helpful for getting her past some of the colds she has. She usually has pretty clear lungs, but a bronch done in July showed a lot of CF-type mucous in there despite "sounding clear".

I definitely plan to discuss HS at her annual visit. I do think we will start it sooner rather than later, but based on her history up till now, I'm not sure its time yet.

My daughter is scheduled to start the ISIS trial in December. I am so excited but a little nervous because she is going to have the Infant PFT done where they put her to sleep with chloral hydrate and assess her lung function. I really hope she can tolerate the hypertonic saline because I think it will be very beneficial in preventing lung damage with bacteria.

My daughter is 6 mos old and has been using HS 7% since about 3 mos old. She started on 3% but that was too hard to get or something...so after she came home form the hospital and we ran out of that they put her on HS 7% and we mix it with sodium chloride .9%. So really, I don't know the difference with out it and she doesn't seem to mind it. Her nebs put her to sleep if I do her percussions at the same time. BUT she has had lung issues since just after birth.

My 4 year old has only been on Pulmozyme since about 2 years old. but no lung issues with her for the most part.
