hypertonic saline vs. pulmozyme

Good morning everyone,

I am writing to ask for input on pulmozyme vs. hypertonic saline. My son, 9, is beginning to develop the CF cough and his pulmozyme + therapy vest does not make his cough more productive. I actually get better results from having him stand in the bathroom with me and breathe heavily. (Is that called Huffing?) Anyway, my compliance as well as his has become horrible because it feels like a waste of time to do treatment. We recently moved from Michigan to North Carolina and have seen the team at UNC. Love Them!!!! They mentioned trying hypertonic saline starting at Andrew's next visit. Can anyone give me the pros and cons of each? Did anyone switch to hypertonic saline and have there cough suddenly become more productive than it was on pulmozyme? I would be very grateful! Thanks!

HS and pulmozyme don't do the same thing as far as I know. Pulmozyme is going to thin the mucus out so that it is easier to bring up with the HS. While pulmozyme might not have many effects that you can see it is important so that the mucus does not get as thick.

HS is the only thing that makes me get up mucus. Because they are for two different purposes I would reccommend doing them both. It is better to start medicines while he is still young so he can get used to them.

Good luck!

Although they might have similiar characteristics.....they provide different uses. My doctor was hesitant about prescribing HS to her patients because she didnt think we would want to do another neb & didnt want Pulmozyme to be replaced by it. This is how it was explained to me. Pulmozyme breaks down the sputum thinning it out (kind of like a jackhammer with concrete), the HS moistens the sputum allowing it to move up & out easier. If I had to choose between the two I would always go with Pulmozyme. Hope this explains the difference a bit.

First of all, Mel...I am glad that my doc isnt the only one who says this sorta thing. My doc said the same thing only the other way around. I was NEVER very productive, or I was and just didnt cough anything out....till I started the HTS. I mean I would cough stuff up, just not like with HTS. My doc told me that essentially they do the same thing...bring up mucus. BUT the HTS is better becuase it brings up MORE stuff. So now, I am only on HTS (through my loud and long compressor) and an inhaled abx (through the eflow). Oh yes and albuterol puffer before HTS I dont do pulmozyme at all, and havent noticed much difference without it. I cough up more stuff, so the HTS must be doing something for me.

Hope this helps...altho you do have three different opinions here...lol. Good Luck!
