Hypertonic Saline

I may be mistaken but I think of couphing as the purpose of HTS (as long as it's productive). When I use it I couph (productively - not just a nagging cauph) during the treatment but not much after. None at night or all day.

It takes me 15 minutes to inhale 5 cc's. But if I'm still "raising" I do another 5 or 10 cc's untill I have no more to cauph up.

I look forward to hearing if it helps you!

Hello. Thanks for all the information you've all provided on Hypertonic Saline. I had never heard of it but am thinking of talking to the dr about it. I have 2 questions about it though, if someone wouldn't mind answering.

First, can this be used as a preventive thing and not just to raise lung function #'s. I mean if you're already in the 100% range, would there still be a benefit to using it? Would it help keep you there?

Secondly, I am wondering if this is in anyway similar to Mucomyst. I know the dr my girls went to for the last 4 years (before we recently moved) didn't really prescribe Pulmozyme but prefered Mucomyst. I'm just curious as to whether we should continue the Mucomyst in addition to the Hypertonic Saline or if it would replace it.

Sorry for being ignorant about this. It gets frustrating sometimes when we are trying so hard to do what's best yet 3 different CF Docs will tell you 3 totally different things. I just want to do what's best for my girls and not what's best for the doctor or for the drug companies. It doesn't matter if it costs $5000.00 a month or $5.00 a month, I just want what works (provided the insurance will pay anyway...that does make a difference).

Thanks very much for your help!

I'm no expert but here's what I've learned. There would be a benefit to using HTS if it helps someone bring up "stuff" they wouldn't otherwise bring up no matter what their numbers are. I don't believe there's a point in using HTS if it doesn't help raise mucous. Mucomyst and Pulmozyme are mucous thinning drugs (although I don't know how[/] they thin the mucous). HTS adds salt to the lungs drawing water from the cells and waters down the mucous to be couphed up.

I just started using HS today and I can already tell it did some good. My dr prescribed me 7% saline by mixing the 10% and 3%. I was just curious if anyone knew if it is ok to try inhaling the 10%. I didn't get irritated when i used the 7% mixture so I thought maybe i could try it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
