Hypertonic Saline is natural its made of only salt and steril water mixed a certain way. All the hypertonic saline done to me was make me cough but now it doesnt, it only makes me cough when Im congested or have a cold. The only side effect I can think of is it irritating the lungs but Im not completly sure on that, I know some may have problems with it. They have a 3% and a 7%, 7% being the strongest which is what I take, some have to take 3%. I hope I helped some. As far as it being approved for children under 6, I have no clue.

I should add that hypertonic saline moisturizes the lungs so mucous can move around much easier. Those with CF have dry lungs which makes it hard for mucous to travel.

CF cilia are paralyzed by the thick, sticky mucus that inhabits the airways.

HTS draws water out of the cells into the airways - and allows the mucus to float above the water. This also allows the cilia to begin beating (not fully, like a non-CF person) - and allows the cilia to serve its function.

To mobilize secretions out of the lungs.

My daughters Drs are considering prescribing Hypertonic Saline for her, she has a cough we can't seem to get rid of and they felt it may help. At the clinic in Seattle they don't normally have kids use it until after they can test lung function, before and after, not sure why.

I would think this is to see if there is any reactive airways. HS can be harsh & not everyone can use it without difficulty.
