My daughters Drs are considering prescribing Hypertonic Saline for her, she has a cough we can't seem to get rid of and they felt it may help. At the clinic in Seattle they don't normally have kids use it until after they can test lung function, before and after, not sure why.</end quote></div>

I would think this is to see if there is any reactive airways. HS can be harsh & not everyone can use it without difficulty.

Our almost 4 year old started Hypertonic Saline 10 days ago. She nebs 4 ml of the 7% solution twice a day. They also have her neb albuterol before each HS treatment. This is to offset the possible tightening of the airways, which is the most common side effect.

The very first time she did it she coughed the whole time and we stopped the treatment early. This happened each time, but has gradually gotten better and has now stopped. The cough only happens during the treatment (I have read on here that some people don't tolerate it well at all and it causes them to cough all day; we have not had this).

Now she can do the whole treatment, but complains about two minutes into it that it burns her nose (she uses a mask) so we are working on her breathing using her mouth only.

Overall she has accepted and tolerates this treatment - takes it in stride just like she does everything else. She has what my grandmother would call a strong constitution. Luv ya Katy - my brave, strong little girl!
