Hypertonic Saline

Hi! Anyone have any quick advice on hypertonic saline? The bronchodialators didn't work for us and I am suspicious about my daughter's reaction to the pulmozyme (AWP). So we have clinic visit today and are going to give hyptertonic saline a whirl. Any suggestions on how to best tolerate this neb? Is everyone on the same solution? I really want her on some mucus clearance therapy and REALLY hope this works.

Thanks!

hypersal helps me cough -- a lot. It's good for clearing out mucus...I'm not going to lie though, it is VERY irritating to inhale. I'm on 7%; I think some are on 3%.

Some people tolerate it well, others do not. I haven't had any side effects from it, it's just irritating to the throat. Make sure to keep water near by while she is nebbing it to help soothe her throat.

We started off diluting it with .09% sterile saline solution. We would do half the hypertonic and 1/2 the sterile saline. We have now worked up to full strength for my oldest and we are pretty close with my 3 year old.

blessings,
missa

I only did HTs for about two months because it made me so wheezy. For me it wasn't worth it, even after trying a bronchodilator before and/or after the HTS I was still wheezy for hours. Its just one thing to keep an eye out for.

Thanks everyone. Well, she did fine in the dr's office. We have to wait a few days for the pharmacy to get it in. Today though she has a barky sort of cough. Is that from the HTS? Does it go away? Also, she isn't doing a bronchodialator (super barky cough all day long with that). Does anyone do HTS without a bronchodialator?

Thanks to everyone for being so supportive.

I cannot say enough about the benefit of hts for Andrew. It is a very irritating med, and Andrew has even had some spells of hemoptysis from it which have required taking a few days off of nebs and airway clearance. But overall, nothing 'gets the gunk up' like hts.

We started him at 3%, then boosted him up to 7%. He participated in a study once that required him to go off of his hts for two weeks before starting. When he went back on, the amount of stuff he coughed up in that first treatment was proof to me that hts is his wonder drug and does a fantastic job of keeping his lungs as clear as possible.

Good luck!

I have used HTS for about a year now and I wouldnt be here without it .I am out of options as far as antibiodics are concerned I have 2 different strands of cepacia that is resistant to everything. So the HTS is a lifesaver .It really helps me bring out the mucus it is harsh at first until you get used to it. Make sure and drink a lot of water that seems to help me with thinning the mucus. The salt draws water and if it isn't there It wont work as well. That's my experience with HTS . I have noticed that if I drink a coke or 2 a day instead of more water my cough is not as productive and have more wheezing . And I do use aluterol before using HTS
