<P>My son started Hypertonic Saline 7% last month. So, far he HATES...HATES it. The only thing I like about it is that we our having the "fight" while he is four and not fourteen. So, hopefully sooooon he will get use to it. That said after some of his morning nebulizer I'm finding saline or spit back in the hose. (He get's angry and cough and yells, and slobber comes out of his mouth) I throw out the hose when i find the moisture...Better safe than sorry. Have you had this issue with any of children? I'm so upset I purchased 8 pari kits last month, and now i'm down to 2 hoses. We can't keep buring through hoses like this. Do any of you know if I can just purchase the hose by itself?? </P>

Have you tried diluting the mixture of Hypersal to see if he can handle it better. We started out with both boys, diluting it by adding 1/2 a vial of hypersal and 2 ml sterile saline solution. They handled it so much better. I slowly diluted the hypersal less and less and now they are doing the full strength just fine.
I am sure you can find the tubing on the internet

A couple thoughts:

Are you having him neb albuterol first? It can be especially irritating if you don't do this first and cause pretty severe bronchospasm. If not, I would try.

Missa defiitely has a good idea to try diluting it and gradually work up to full strength. Normal saline (.9%) comes in vials like other nebs and is very cheap.

I would ask for more tubing at clinic. You can also buy it online for $5+ per set depending on what site is running a sale, google it- never, ever buy at cost through whoever your insurance company gets equipment from. You'll pay 3x what you have to! I would also put the compressor up on a table or other elevated surface so the tubing can hang down and let it run for several minutes with no neb attached- the air flowing through will help it dry out. and I've seen the instructions recommend to store the tubing between treatments hanging with both ends downwards so no condensation will stay inside. Never ever try to wash the inside of the tubing- but I have swabbed the end off and inside the end of the wingtip with alcohol wipes when she's sick.

Emily's dr recommended that we have a cup of her favorite strong-tasting drink available when nebbing hypersal to sip on to help deal with the taste, i.e. grape juice, even soda, etc. As it turns out this child loves it and will even drink it... lol... but I wanted to pass the suggestion on. :)

My 22 month old just completed the ISIS trial for hypertonic saline in infants. He would also get moisture in the tubing after his nebs. The research nurse and his CF doc just told me to run the compresser with only the hose attached (detach neb cup and mask/mouthpiece) for a few mins. and it will dry it out. Then we only had to replace the hose when we replaced the neb cup and mask.

Hi - we started saline gradually - at first it was 0,9% - then 3% and now - Joanna being alsmost 4 years old - 5,5% and going to 7% soon. We also get moisture in the tube sometimes - not always. I blow it out and also sterilize in a baby bottle steam sterilizer onece a week or everytime when she's sick and then blow the moisture out with the compressor without attaching the nebulizarer - like MamaDee.
I sugest you strat giving the saline gardually like Harriet wrote - by diluting it with 0,9% saline to about 3 % - if you have 7% 2ml and 2ml 0,9 % you get a bit more then 3% 4ml saline. Do it for about a week and then try 5%, wait a bit and go for 7 % again.
We also replace tube erey year or so
