My son is always in the hospital and the nurses and respritory staff are everything to him when he is there. A big thing for him is that they don't treat him like a "patient". They take the time to listen to him, joke around with him, and indulge him when he is playing make believe. Always remember a patient with cf is different than most patients because they have always had this. They know about their medicines routines and their illness just like most kids know about bath time and dinner routines. Never talk to the parents as if you know more about the child than they do or act as if anything is over their heads. For some of the kids with cf the hospital is a second home and the staff is a second family. As mentioned above listening to your patients is HUGE!!! And be careful of the way you treat people on isolation, this can be very ssensitive to a lot of people. I think for Most nurses it's easy to care for these kids because they are so lovable and know what is going on.
