thanks, all! Your replies make me feel less alone. I was worried I was going to get a bunch of "You're being silly" type replies. It's so stupid that we feel this way, but it's also hard not to!
<br />
<br />And don't even get me started on the "What a cough! You'd better quit smoking!" comments, lol. I get those while at work all the time from people. *eye roll*
<br />
<br />Thanks, guys.

i am 31 and my function is at 32%... i still work but part-time and do way to much other stuff, so giving up wont help you ...you need to get your pft's done, and a sputum culture, maybe you have something growing and affecting your function...or even worse... i was feeling short of breathe for 3 weeks and tired and it turned out I had a partial lung collapse. Sometimes its easier to bite the bullet and see the doctor

I'm already on O2 at night and on IVs for an infection. Last time I went to the doc was about 3 weeks ago and had a needle change/labs done for my port yesterday. Thanks for the advice, but I'm just venting about being out of breath and feeling uncomfortable about it, and wondering if others feel this way, too! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I always get embarrassed when I'm coughing or out of breath.  When I start coughing at work I always get the strange looks--like why don't you stay home if you are sick.  Too bad we are "sick" every day.  And I hate coughing during meetings when someone is speaking or on hall duty when I am supposed to be supervising kids, but I am coughing since I had to travel halfway around school to get to my post.  And I hate to have to ask to have my post moved closer to my classroom, because I don't want to look like a wuss.  Anyway, you are not alone.  We just want to be normal and fit in.  <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Erin, I think it's very normal to feel embarassed when we do stuff like have a coughing fit. After all normal people cough here and there but don't have fits like we do. I'm wondering if you have started the evaluation process. How long have you been in the 30s? Not sure what you are in school for but could you get an internship in your field that could possibly be a seated job?

Personally I think being at a register - standing for hours upon hours with lung function in the 30s is not such a great idea. It's a major energy suck and it's not doing anything for your health that I can think of. Also you are coming in contact with many items that have been touched by many people not to mention the customers right around you who often have colds I'm sure. I'd think it would be better to do a seated job and then use that energy to exercise...if you have any energy left. Your schedule sounds grueling.

Could you take it a bit more easy and allow yourself to enjoy life a bit more? If you aren't considering tx at what point will you? Just saying it sounds like your life is a candle burning at both ends. I'm not sure how much longer you could go on at this pace before the flame. goes. out. Just sayin'.
