Hi everyone....i was just wondering how long it took before the side effects of steroids began for you. Im 14 years old and i was on steroids for 3 years...i started when i was 8. Im very sick now and i think that steroids are the next step. I dont really remember how long it took for the side effects to happen so i wanted to ask everyone else.

Steroids will only deal with inflammation. There are many other routes to try before steroids. How long it takes for them to take effect is different for everyone, and it depends on the dosage and how long the course of treatment is. When you ask how long it takes for side effects to happen, do you mean to ask how long it takes before you notice an improvement, or are you really asking how long you'll be able to go before all the nasty stuff about the steroids kicks in. (high blood sugar, moon face, bloated belly, etc.)

I just finished a month's worth of prednisone and had only minimal side effects. I didn't get too puffy in my face, just my belly. My blood sugar went crazy though, but has been more stable as I've weaned off the steroid.

Good luck!

I couldn't take prednisone. I got side effects almost immediately. They switched me to dexamethasone and it took several months, but after that point I gained about 20 pounds and got all kinds of nasty side effects, I just had to start insulin for uncontrolled blood sugar.

At the moment we are working on tapering me off the steroids. It's been hell coming off the dex though. I'll never do long term, high dose steroids again. In my opinion it's not worth it, but that's a choice I've made for myself and my situation with my CF is different from most.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you feel better.

I agree with Lightnlife. I have never (well I have but was on a small dose) been on these things long term. I have always been very responsive to abx alone, no steroids. But more recently have been on them sooooo much, so a twice this year I was also put on Prednisone with the oral abx. The last time (about a week ago) the prednisone did me wonders! I was over my infection, it felt like within 24 hours (obv kept taking the meds though). I was feeling immediately better and didnt notice very much in the way of side effects. I think maybe short term is easier for the body to handle...I was on a short term, but high dose. It was 20 mgs twice a day for three days and then 20 mgs once a day for two days.
