I Had My Baby!

Lillian Mabel was born on Sunday, May 30th at 8:35 AM! She weighed 7lbs 12oz and was 20-1/4 inches long.

I went into the hospital for induction on Friday night. They administered Cervidil overnight and started Pitocin the next morning. I had 19 hours of active labor and 3-1/2 hours of pushing. The baby got stuck in the birth canal on the way out and the doctor had to use a vacuum extractor to get her out.

I'm pretty sure that CF ended up having an impact on my labor - I went into labor battling a sinus infection. I had felt like absolute crap all week and was in the middle of a 10-day course of Ceftin. At about 16 hours into my labor, (and I'm counting it as 16 hours after noticeable contractions started, which was about 1-hour after getting the Pitocin), I got a fever of 102. The doctors said it was most likely either the sinus infection or a possible uterine infection that caused the fever. Because it could have been a uterine infection, that meant our daughter had to spend two days in NICU to receive antibiotics while they waited for blood culture results to come back. Luckily, they were NEGATIVE and she got to come home from the hospital with us! So, it was probably just the sinus infection that caused the fever.

Lillian has seen her pediatrician twice since we left the hospital, and has gotten a glowing bill of good health so far!

We've been home for over a week now and my husband and are still working on getting the hang of things. Breastfeeding has been a HUGE challenge (due to her getting bottles in NICU, her head being sore from the vacuum extractor, and my milk taking 9 days to come in because of the fever, excessive swelling, and hemorrhaging I experienced during labor), but we are working with a great lactation consultant and things are going in a positive direction.

But we are so, so, so in love with our daughter and feel so incredibly lucky! Despite the challenges and sleep deprivation, we are having so much fun, and I feel like this is such a special time in my life. I can't believe she is ours - I could just snuggle her all day and I already don't want her to grow up!

Congrats Kristen! She is a beauty and I love the full head of hair!! Wow 16 hrs. I know how it goes with those long labors. Feels like a time warp with the days coming and going..seing the sun rise. Force yourself to sleep even though you feel like you might miss something.

It takes a while to recouperate. I also started Pitocin (water broke and no contractions started) and labored (with contractions and no epidural!)for 19 hrs before being given permission to push. At that point it had been 32 hrs since my water broke so when I was at 8 cm for 3 hrs after 24 hrs since water broke I decided to get an epidural. It worked to relax me those last few cm and I was able to push. I pushed for 1.5 hrs before a he arrived healthy as could be. I wonder if my water hadn't broken how much longer he would have stayed in there since he obviously was in no hurry to get out :)

How are you feeling now?

Wishing you all the best.

Congratulations! She is beautiful! My girl didn't get that much hair until she was pushing 3 yrs--so jealous :)

I am sorry your labor was hard and the pushing so long. I am sure the fever/infection made everything that much more exhausting.

I hope you are feeling better and have lots of helpful help :)
