I had my surgery

Hi Everyone,
I had my thoracotomy/lobectomy on march 30th. It didnt go as well as planned and I had to have a second emergency surgery a few hours later.
The initial surgery went well and the doctors were very happy with everything. They said my right upper lobe was absolutely disgusting and it was a good move to get it out of there. I was awake and seemed to be doing well.

A few hours after the first surgery my blood pressure and hematocrit started to decliine. Suddenly my blood pressure dropped to 25/15 and my hematocrit was 8!!!! I lost consciousness and they had to do compressions to keep my heart beating. My body went into complete shock and my kidneys and liver stopped working. They realized I was bleeding internally and immediately took me back to the OR. When they opened my chest for the second time there was 2 liters of blood in there. They could not find the source of bleeding but finally saw way down at the bottom of my chest there was a rib that had gotten cracked and it nicked an artery and was causing lots of blood loss. They repaired the artery and sewed me up and hoped that my body (kidneys, liver, brain etc..)could recover.

So, after two 8 hour surgeries I finally went to the ICU to recover. I wound up being intubated for 5 days and in the ICU for 7. Finally on the 7th day I woke up and was stable enough to go back to the regular floor. I just left the hospital last thursday (april 14th). Now Im home recovering slowly.
I have a 9 inch long scar that goes from under my right shoulder bone to under my right arm (and a small one below that from chest tube) Other than that, the rest of my body, kidneys, liver and stuff are slowly getting back to normal. All of my labs are getting better each time they check them.

My family never left my side, they really thought they were going to lose me--that whole week I was in very critical condition. The doctors said things could change from good to bad at any second. It was a trying time for everyone. But, I made it through and now I look forward to a healthier summer since I will no longer have to deal with that ratty right upper lobe (once this chest pain gets better)!!

Hi, I just wanted to say congrats and I hope you feel better soon!!! Do you mind me asking why you decided to get a lobectomy? My Right upper lobe has a huge big black cirle when you look at the cat scan. So my doc said that basically my right upper lobe is dead and is taking up space... My pfts are pretty low and I am not sure if i should risk the surgery, not knowing if it will make me better or what?!!! So i was just curious on that....

Hey Jaime,

It's great that your are feeling much better, very good to hear. Some how I missed your age on the bottom of your emails, must had been tired. Thanks for responding.

I currently live in Boston, I just moved here about 6 months ago from MN. I also go to Childrens'. I was going to start at the Brigham, but I choose Childrens' just because. I see Dr. Donavan, she's very nice so far. However, I do correspond with my doc at home, I trust him. I am quite in charge of my health, but it's always good to run it by someone that your respect.

I guess I will see..

I hope you keep feeling better daily.

WOW!!! U ARE A VERY BRAVE PERSON TO SAY THE LEAST!!!I CAN NOT!!!! EVEN IMAGINE HAVING TO DEAL WITH WHAT U R GOING THRU!!!MY ONLY BROTHER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH C/F AT THE AGE OF 4. HE IS NOW 22 YEARS OLD, AND VERY ILL BUT HE REFUSES TO TAKE CARE OF HIMSELF AND IS VERY ANGRY AT THE WORLD AND HATES ME BECAUSE HE IS JEALOUS AT THE FACT THAT I AM HEALTHY, AND HE IS NOT...DO U BLAME HIM, I DONT!! IT BREAKS MY HEART TO SEE HIM IN THE SITUATION THAT HE IS IN...HE LIVES ABOUT 3 HOURS AWAY, AND 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 WHEN I CALL HIM I GET A HANG UP..HE DOESN'T WANT ME TO COME VISIT, AND HE WON'T VISIT ME..I HAVEN'T SEEN HIM IN ABOUT TWO YEARS OR SO..HE SLEEPS HALF THE DAY, HAS ABSOLUTELY NO ENERGY, AND DOESNT DO ANYTHING EXCEPT MESS AROUND ON THE COMPUTER.HE RECIEVES DISSABILITY, WHICH IS NOT MUCH. ANYWAYS, EVERYONE HAS A STORY, BUT I AM GLAD U ARE DOING BETTER!!KEEP THINKING POSITIVE, ALTHOUGH SOME DAYS I'M SURE IT IS HARD TO DO THAT...I WISH YOU THE VERY BEST......JOY
