I am simply writing to be reassured and comforted. I started dating someone with CF and don't know where to turn for advice. I am scared and just want to know what to expect. What is the life expectancy for people born in 1991?

The average age is 37, Some live longer than that, some don't. It really affects everyone differently. Asking where her PFT's are at when she's healthy is a better indication than her age alone I believe.

There's no set age, CF is very different for everyone and it all depends on how well she's doing and how well she takes care of herself. There are people who die as children and then I know I've seen people on this website in their 70's its highly individual. The best part is there is always research and new meds/treatments being worked on and perfected every day. It sounds like you two need to have a serious discussion about how things are going with her. Its a nice sign of support when someone cares enough to find out all they can about this disease and all that goes with it. Be supportive and ask questions if you have them. Be careful with looking up stuff online about CF though, there is a lot of out of date data out there that can make it seem a lot scarier. I can tell you though I was born in 1988 and my parents were told I'd be lucky to make it past about 6 or 7, now I'm 22 and still going having led a very normal life, basically all of us have surpassed some time frame our parents were told, medicine just keeps getting better!

Totally. It depends on her individual situation. CF hits some people mildly, some people harder. Ask her! Also, get as much info as you can! Going to the doctor with her is a great way to show support and also to get information. BEWARE of what you find on the internet, it is out of date and scary! I'm 31 and I plan on being around a LONG LONG time <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have to admit I was once in your shoes when I first started dating my fiance who has CF. although he was upfront with me about a lot of things, I still did a lot of research on my own, for verification I guess. Everyone is right about the internet. I scared myself silly reading some of data. They are out of date and tend to use worse case scenerios. I did feel a sense of relief once I started finding people with CF who are in their 50's, 60's and 70's. While I know that is not a guarantee, which even those of us without CF have no guarantee on our time here on earth, it gave me hope knowing that having CF doesn't necessarily mean you have a shortened life expectancy. Because CF is different for everyone, I would suggest talking to her, her family and going to her appointments with her.

My fiance is 30, great lung functions (better than mine actually), and spends all of his free time at the beach surfing (again...better than me) haha. His parents were also told he probably wouldn't live to be 6 or 7. So, I don't really think doctors can give a life expectancy...

Hi, I was born in 1970...I am 40.....there you go...you never know. I would just enjoy life with your gf. Have fun! You are only young once. Dont waste a second of your time dwelling on the "what if's". I have lost so many of my peers and friends to accidents and sudden illness...you just never know what life has in store.

just like everyone said u cant base it of a yr she waqs born, but if u love her that wont matter a bit if u knew how long she would be here. u cant really go off her health either cuz my wife just passed from cf on the 18th of nov and she was doing just fine till bout 4 months ago. u just need to ask urself if u love her and r ready for a possable ruff road ahead. even thru all the pain iv been thru last 3 weeks being with her is something that i wouldnt change for my life.
