I just coughed up blood

I just coughed up blood for the second time in my life. The first time was about 10 years ago when I was about a week into a struggle with bronchitis. This time, I feel FINE. I just felt a little tickle, like I needed to get some phlegm up, only, it was blood - not blood streaked phlegm, 100% bright red blood. Not a lot of it, like maybe 1/8 of a teaspoon.

I called my doc right away, but, of course, it's Friday after 5 and they are gone for the weekend, which is why I am posting here - is this something I can just keep my eye on?

(And, FWIW, I have my period - I'm mentioning it because I've heard of other women with CF getting this when they have their period)

Being you are not a regular bleeder....I will tell you my routine.

If I have fresh, pure blood I hold off on my vest, my pulmozyme and HTS. They would be irritating. My doctor tells me to be blood free for 24 hours before reintroducing them. I start back with the vest first, then the pulmozyme then the HTS.

If I have blood streaked sputum I usually just let up on the nebs......

If you have vitamin K....be sure to take some. If it continues try drinking ice water & if bad enough....put ice packs on your chest. Try not to lay flat.

My concern is WHY you have the hemoptysis. I realize that like me....your period would make you more prone, but I dont understand why all of a sudden.

As soon as you can follow up with a doctor I think you should. All of my info is based on years of bleeds!

Good Luck!

Thanks to you both for the advice! I spoke with the CF doc on call. He is not my regular CF doctor & is not familiar with my usual bugs, so he said that I should just keep an eye on it and call him back if it gets worse. He told me I probably have an exacerbation and to call my regular CF doctor on Monday so he can prescribe me the right antibiotics. In the meantime, I'm supposed to stop my albuterol and HS for one day, but continue my colistin. And I'm gonna go get some vitamin K if it happens again!
