The longer the notes and the louder does the job.
I find show tunes from musicals REALLY work up the gunk.

Right now, I've been belting out the soundtrack from "Wicked"

I love to sing (mostly in the car and the shower), and I think it actually helps bring stuff up.

I used to sing in a band years ago, and it didnt do much in the way of clearance for me then mostly because i didnt have a lot of lung involvemnent with my cf yet. Now that i have more involvement and have been coughing a lot ( compared to what i did pre-cepacia) for like 11 years, my voice has tajen a beating. I cant believe it is my voice coming out of me. I used to have a very powerful voice and still do to a point, but i cant hold the notes as long, and my voice cracks a lot which it never did before, but sure enough it does bring the stuff up. One other thing it does which i do not like is.... It makes the muscles in my throat hurt if i sing too loud or too long. So yep singing is very beneficial to us cf'ers

I'm not alone- whew! I read somewhere (a long, long time ago) that professional singers have better lung capacity than the average person, so I sing (badly, very badly- small children, including my own child, have asked me not to sing ) whenever I get the chance- usually in the car, so I can't really hear myself either these days, with this raspy allergy throat, lol.

I play the violin because I never could sing worth a darn. When I played the Bassoon & tuba (only for a little while back in HS), now that used to bring up some serious phlegm! <ewwww> ~Juliet
